Another .17 Question.

Recommended Posts

The .17 Remington has been around a fairly long time and I have always seen it chambered in most factory rifles by a few companies. But it seems that it is being eclipsed by this new .17 Fireball.

Does anyone know of any current Chamberings and does anyone know of a model of rifle with a synthetic stock in this chambering.

Any help is much appreciated.

I think only Remington are currently producing rifles with .17 Rem Fireball chambering.

There are several models with synthetic stocks, the Model 700 SPS Varmint and Model 700 VS SF. I'm not sure whether the camo version of the Model Seven Predator is synthetic or a camo finish over wood.

There's also a nice looking timber stock version, the Model Seven CDL with a 20" barrel.

Thanks Anyway Pisces, but I was looking for .17 Remington Magnum chamberings, Maybe it needed to be more clear

In centrefire there is the .17 Rem and .17 Rem Fireball.

In rimfire there is the .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire and .17 Hornady Mach 2.

What is a .17 Remington Magnum as it is unlisted here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rifle_cartridges

I confused too, but it's easily done with me.

I've not heard of a .17 Remington Magnum either. Is it something like the .177HMR ;)

Chuck Hawks has an article on both the .17REM and .17Remington Fireball

The HMR is a rimfire as you know John. The .17 Remington and .17 Fireball are centrefires. The Remington Magnum is an out and out Fox gun as is the Fireball, and its a very safe round, firing comparatively tiny bullet at 4000 fps in some cases. It has a reputation as a barrel burner and the new Fireball is supposed to curb the Rem Mags problems. But the Fireball is very new and the availability of guns and ammo here is extremely small.

Thanks for the article John ;)

The .177HMR was a joke lol.

Leaving out rimfires.

Are you saying there's another calibre apart from the .17REM and .17Remington Fireball? This new (or unheard of by me, entirely possible) calibre being the .17 Remington Magnum?

I've never heard of it. Is it a factory cartridge or a wildcat?

I need the above questions clarified for my own sanity :clapper:

It seems I have confused the lot of you

The .17 Remington is the same as the Remington Magnum. I am used to it being called it and so use it. But I can see its causing confusion. They are one and the same. A Factory round John, but now Im guessing you have heard of it? Just me that is driving you insane, as usual?:laugh:

The Fireball is new. 2007 I believe and has replaced the .17 Remington in all of Remington's previous chamberings for .17 Remington.

Sorry to have confuzzled you!

I was figuring you had confused the .17REM with something else so wasn't tooo far off the mark.

So now, are you looking for a synthetic stocked rifle in .17REM or in .17Remington Fireball?

And if you come up with any more friggin semi made up names, so help me...

And a Welshman to confuse us all !!! I have a Tikka M595 in .17 rem - never knew it as a magnum. Mine has fired many hundreds of shots - the secret of barrel life is in the cleaning whether I fire one or ten shots. This little gun regularly drops foxes well out past 200 yards.

I will admit it was a b****r to find the right load for it

I didn't find any more rifles chambered for it. Mind you I didn't exactly do an intensive search. Jesus but some of those gun makers could cop themselves on and make their sites a little more user friendly.

Cooper and Tikka, two good choices at least
