Budget not great but enough lol. Thanks all Fraggle. if i could have two rifles just for rabbit and fox then hmr for rabbit and 22/250 for fox but if you want to save money then 22lr for rabbit as its cheaper to run. and 223 for fox again cheaper to run the 22/250 Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
I would say the same, if you can afford two Rifles then, I would go for the .22 LR and the .223. They are both perfectly capable, time proven rounds, indeed, the .223(5.56mm) is, in a slightly different form, what you are shooting out of your SA-. And the .22LR has killed more Rabbits and other vermin than is imaginable, the figure must be in the Billions. You could always go for other calibres for fox such as the .22-250, .222, .22 Hornet or .243 but the .223 is used by so many fox shooters, there must be something good about it! If you are really stuck for one rifle, then depending on which you are going to shoot more of, the .223 or the .17 HMR. Get the .17 for Rabbits and the occasional fox. And the .223 for foxes and the occasional head shot Rabbit. But on the whole, two rifles would suit you better. Regards SS P.S See if you can sneak one of those SA-'s home with you next time, put a broom handle in its place in the armoury, they wont notice Quote Link to post
CharlieT 32
Don't forget the .204 Ruger. Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Or indeed the .17 Rem Mag, the .17 Fireball, .220 Swift, etc etc etc There are hundreds. Quote Link to post
brno17 5
this post could probably go on and on but if it has to be just one rifle for rabbits and the odd fox then get the 17HMR ( tin helmet on ), but best check with your feo if fox will be allowed with that calibre in your area as what ive read on the site it varies. alan. If you have the HMR down on your Certificate for Vermin then you can shoot fox. No Licensing Department will stop you. They know the conditions are so so vague they would never win. fraggle 4
think i will go for the 22lr for know, and then progress one the wife to allow the 223 aswell, its mainly bunnies i'm after and the odd fox, what range am i looking at for the 22lr, i'm hoping for 100yard hits is this possible with it. Thanks all Fraggle Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
With a 60 Yard zero, you can get 100 yarders easily and with practice it will become muscle memory. Good Choice and I hope you get the .223 Regards SS Quote Link to post
hunter1 63
i use 22rimfire cz cheap to run good tool and mannlicher 223had lots foxes rabbits crows . Quote Link to post
Mr_Logic 5
If you're talking rimfire calibres, then for both on a regular basis I'd get 22 Magnum. Hits harder than the HMR and is flat to 100 yards. 17HMR if it's mainly bunnies with the odd fox. 22 Hornet is brilliant if you can get the ammo or you reload, since trajectory is similar to HMR (smidge flatter) but it hits with 3 times the power. 223 is also very good, but you need to feed the rifle cheap ammo to be worthwhile. SP or some HP ammo will be OK on body shots too, or you could try FMJ. personally I don't find FMJ does enough damage to be humane. I regularly shoot rabbits with quid-a-bang 223, the practicalities are fine, but the dent on the wallet means changes are required!! Edited August 18, 2008 by Mr_Logic Quote Link to post
