Friday evening stalk/lamp.

Recommended Posts

Decided on a look around some ground i hardly ever visit now but the choice was worth it as it happened .The farmer was watching the last few swaths of barley disappearing under the combine and we had a chat over the gate about what was where and at what time .Local knowledge is sometimes the key to a good outing and this was no exception .He mentioned a couple of bucks seen in a particular field and urged me to get one or both as the neighbour has recently put up a high seat on the boundary .He also said about a litter of cubs that outstayed their welcome by chasing his chickens .He did add that they hadnt caught one yet but we both knew it was a matter of time .The vixen has recently been shot here by the farmers son and the cubs lamped relentlessly to no avail .

Set off for the field in question that held the bucks ,full of anticipation .Bumped a doe and twins on the way but she was only half hearted in her retreat and never moved any more deer .The 20 acres as its known ,has a clump of trees around a pond in far corner and i saw the ass end of a deer disappear behind it as i glassed the field from a hole in the hedge .

The pond is a good 300 yards from my position so a stalk was needed to come to terms with the deer .I started my crawl when a buck came through the hedge to my left and pranced ,yes pranced towards the pond area ,obviously aware of the other deer .It was a decent buck with thick ,short tines and i was happy to shoot it but that was not to be .He trotted right around the pond ,flushing the other deer which was not surprisingly ,another buck and he came down the hedge towards me ,only looking back once .The other buck never reappeared so a new target was chosen .A lesser buck in antler and size .The shot was good with carved out cattle wallow as a backstop and down he went ,shot perfectly through the heart at about 8o yds.

Took him back to the truck after the gralloch and had a drink .It was sweltering hot and very humid ,not ideal lamping weather but i said i would have a look .The farmers son caught me up and offered to lamp for me,something i wasnt banking on as these lads are not blessed with the ability to keep quiet .Anyway ,what could i say and off we went .A flick revealed 3 cubs up the top of the field but they wernt interested in a squeak at all .I was surprised to see they wernt that lamp shy ,despite the attention they have had .The field has recently been baled for hay ,round bales and leaving the lamper where he stood i decided to creep from one to another until i was within 100 yds of the nearest cub .I knew i would only get the one shot with the .222 so took it ,killing a cub outright and watched the other two disappear rapidly .Waited for an hour to see if they would show up, with farmers son talking throughout despite me getting annoyed and showing it . No sign but i will be back :victory:

So you don't keep any for yourself, just onsell them?

Occasionally one for the freezer mate but most to the game dealer .If you find it a bit like killing for killings sake ,we have an abundance of roe here in Wiltshire that needs culling on a regular basis and im the man for the job .

No not at all FD, I guess it sounds that way, not what I meant though, just interested in how much of a meal you get off them little fellas, ie how many kilos of edible meat and so forth, just interested mate, we don't have them over here.
