Kay 3,709
The greyhounds been here just over 4 months & i want to know how do i tell if she isnt to thin or to fat . she has been having some dry food & some raw lamb & mince , i am mithered about her being to thin after that rspca fiasco , but i dont want her to get to heavey She was speyed when she came here , so after 4 months would you expect her to be a bit more meaty now , she was wormed with drontol when she arrived , whats worrying me is i can see her ribs , all of them & her back legs on the hip part sticks out a bit, i have been wary of not feeding her any old shite & she gets 2 shapes a day treat thats all , i dont give her dinner scraps just the raw meat & a bit off dry food mixed I just dont know what she should look like for a greyhound who isnt worked & is basically lazy , she has a toilet walk on the green in the morning & is then fed one meal , then depending how hot it is she has a good path walk for about half hour a bit later , then another toilet walk & a final trot round the block about 10pm then a quick toilet walk just before i go to bed , she isnt really wanting to go far on walks & as soon as she gets home she is straight back in her bed where she spends 90% of the time , is this normal What comes out in the way of waste is solid & normal looking , she isnt sickening for anything so maybe i am mithering to much , but just wondered what other people think Quote Link to post

Kay 3,709
The other thing i have noticed is she is a different dog when she is walked after dark, her heads up & she is very alert , she almost trotts along but during the day she walks very close to me & seems wary of everything , so thats got me puzzled Quote Link to post
bill88 6
Kay sounds like your doing a good job mate. All sighthounds are different, salukis in particular look emaciated when there at there peak, with most of the ribs showing and the pin bones sticking up on the rear.My colliexgrey always looks heavy even when she's fully fit,and the BeddyxWhippet looks like skin and bone when she's fit.One thing i will say is mine are always on the heavy side in summer, mainly because they're not working, and because of the heat i tend to walk them less in the warmer months,by late September they'll be at there peak again. All the best,Bill Quote Link to post

Jim Grant 4
We have taken on a rescue greyhound four months ago. He kept knocking up his toes when he raced. He lay in a racing kennel for most of his life, and was all skin and grief when the better half picked him up. She has put six kilos onto him and he is moving much better. He was so stiff when he can I thought that he would never get into a gallop. He was run with the lurchers who took the piss out of him for the first three months. His turning circle was about the same as the QE2. A month or so ago everything fell into place, he had picked up the weight he needed, he had been exercised enough to get suppled up and started to motor. The brindle bitch got the fright of her life when he bit her on the bum when they were out running round the ten acre field. In went the turbo and she thought she had lost him. Daft bitch she got a bite on the other side. So I guess that you just have to feed them, give them exercise, bit of speed work, and leave them to sleep for 22 hours a day, but as has been said show them a "Bunny" and the light up the afterburners. Best of luck with him. Quote Link to post
shepp 2,285
Maybe take a visit to your local greyhound track and take a close look at the dogs, you could aim to get him a little fatter than them. Quote Link to post
