Not long now!!

Recommended Posts

Not long now till the fields are cut and Autumn's here, i'm just interested how other people get ready for the season ahead?

When do you start getting ready?

How do you get the dogs fit? jogging behind the car, jogging alongside the push bike or just conventional road walking?

How many times a week do you do this for and how long/far each period?

Do you start to give them a bit more food?

It will be interesting to see the different replys? :hmm:

well i started to get the dogs into proper condition a couple of week back, jogging them behind the little lads quad off the lead for roughly 3 mile ( the dogs do about 6 lol ) a night 5 nights a week....

the little lad goes with me so i can kill two birds with one stone and the dogs are looking in top order allready, i'll do this for about another month, then the season should be upon us....cant wait :yahoo:

just lots of long walks then start lamping start of september...that said I'm bringing on an 11 month pup at the mo so I've started lamping with him now just a few runs every 2nd night and build from there. Nothing like lamping rabbits for bringing your dog up to peak fitness.

My springer and lab are getting loads of beach work, swimming etc, and retrieve training, but they are quite easy to do as they love the water and will run all day!!

My lurcher will be getting road work for a month, just walking, but still with any free running he wants to do whilst out with the other 2!! After the road walking we'll be running together, prob about 5 miles a night for as long as i can take it, this gets him a good way towards being ready for a nights graft and gets me ready for carrying all the game, as my trusted hunting partner, mentioning no names ..........CHARTPOLSKI..........always forgets his game bag!!!!!!!

I start with Road work about three miles a day as quick as i can do it. The dog loves to retrieve including out of water so i give him four or five retrieves in the river once or twice a week. The week before lamping i will buy in 80 lbs of beef fore the freezer and switch from all red mills racer to a pound of beef and the same racer. I usually worm the dogs at this time of year so they will be free most of the hunting season. A couple of big bones too, to work the jaw muscles and strengthen the gums. At this point i will also add white e to their food to help with muscle recovery as they start to work hard. As the weather starts to get colder the kennel coats will be on at night to help with a warm down and maintain weight. I also start to give their feet a spray with meth’s two times a week to toughen up their pads. I will also buy in cut heal, aluspray, blue spay and half a dozen small bottles of hydrogen peroxide to treat minor cuts and tears i also like to keep a bottle of Mr. muscle to rub the dogs down if they take a rough tumble in the line of duty, or show a sprain. Thats how I get my lurchers fit and try to keep them in one piece through the season.

Whats white e? :hmm:
