Kye 77
Hi Guys,.. IMO, to fly BOP at game, you need money, time, and dedication...at the moment i have the dedication and the time, but no money...lol...in the very near future, i will have the dedication and the money, but no time... ...i guess you cant have it all eh?.. When i was younger, my Dad kept many BOP, and i flew kestrels, and a Tawny Owl...when i got a little older we had good fun with HH and my dads female RedTail...the best birds that he had was the imprinted Spar and his male Gos...what a cracker!....He bred Luggers and Lanners, but didnt fly them, so i cant remember much about them... What with terriers and sighthounds, and my training, im kept fairly busy...but i would like to think that once we maybe thin out the dogs, to just workers, i MAY have time to get a BOP...the Wife has always been keen on the idea aswell. I live in the Mid-West, and it was strange at first to see Redtails flying around carrying big feck off snakes and lizards and such..lol...we also have a bunch of owls, Barred Owls, Screech Owls, and Great Horned Owls!...we see them often when out at night with the light. We have Northern Harriers, Coopers Hawks, and Sharp Shinned Hawks,...Turkey Vultures everywhere, and often see Bald Eagles on the midden piles we make too encourage the Coyotes...not to mention all the beautiful kestrels!...quite a varity!.. Quarry wise, we have alot as well!...Rabbits, Fox and Grey Squirrels, Bobwhite Quail, a few Partridge, Crows, a boat load of different Ducks and other waterfowl. On the smaller side, and some things you lads might not be so familier with, we have Boat tailed gackles, which are like a hybrid between a black bird and a magpie. Then we have the Red wing Black bird...kind of like the black bird back home, but with bright red and yellow patches on its shoulders... Meadowlarks, Plovers, Starlings, Sparrows, and a bunch of other smaller stuff!... So what would you guys recomend...im not a twat when it comes to these things guys...certainly not a 'flash in the pan' type of guy when it comes to livestock/animals that im gonna keep...this is mearly research for a MAYBE in the future! Permission is not an issue either over here...we have boat loads of it! Im thinking a RedTail?...they are easy to get (one on every other lamp post!) and if circumstances change, i could hack it back to the wild easily enough. It would suitable for the Squirrels, and rabbits, and maybe be able to take a few jack rabbits (hares) when we visit a few western states...my dads female took duck and coot very often. But if i went for summat like a Coopers, i could get flights in the field in-front of my house!...i would be walking 50 yards and be able to fly at BlackBirds, Plovers, Doves, Larks and other more "Sparrowhawk calibre" type of quarry, but i would have to drive to get rabbits and squirrels (only between 5-30 minutes though,..no big deal!) but i would be able to get good flights on my door step at the smaller stuff... So i would like to hear from you more exsperianced guys, as im certainly not that!...ive been around BOP, and i would rate my stockmanship as better than average...my dogs are always in great shape (in season) and well looked after, as is the rest of my stock. Coopers look great...kinda bwetween a Spar and Gos in size?...ive seen them hunting the hedgerows here, very Spar like in there style ive noticed!...very "up-and-at-'em"... Im open to all comments guys and look forward to hearing from you...we also have to do research on Falconry in our state...it is the most regulated form of hunting in america!...you can buy a .308 at Wal-Mart, and go kill a deer, but you need courses and special papers to fly BOP at game!...God bless America eh!?..lol. Many thanks!.. Kye.. Quote Link to post
Rentomski 0
First you are going to need a mentor or sponsor, i.e someone who holds Master or General Federal and State falconry permits, who is willing to teach and guide you for two years. Then you take and pass your Federal and State falconry examinations, build a mews and outdoor weathering and get them inspected and approved. Then and only then are you, as an apprentice falconer, permitted to trap a Redtailed Hawk, American Kestrel or a Red Shouldered Hawk. Forget about Cooper's Hawks for now, the law doesn't allow them to apprentices as they are delicate temperamental birds that need an experienced falconer to get the best out of them. Which State do you live in? I know a few USA falconers and they might be able help you locate a mentor. Quote Link to post
Kye 77
Hi there,.. Yeah, i know there is alot of red tape for falconry...i met a 16 year old lad that has just got his first bird (RedTail) and he was telling me about being sponsored and everything. Im in Missouri (MO) if that any help to you...as i said, just making inquirys at the moment, but definatly summat i would get into, maybe in the next few years. many thanks.. Kye.. Quote Link to post
Simoman 110
Your just trying to make us all jealous aren't you Jay?...........................Its working Quote Link to post
Kye 77
Hi Si,.. Me?...try and make someone jealous?...NEVER!..lol. As i said mate, im just thinking out aloud realy...i start work at the Gym in a very short time, so im gonna have flexable hours and more money coming in...but what with all the other stuff going on in our lives, if i dont think i have MORE than enough time for a BOP, i just wont bother...i try not to have "hobbies"...to me, a "hobbie" is like reading, or painting or writting poetry....i wouldnt desribe anything that involves living creatures, as a 'hobbie'...it has to be a part of your lifestyle...not summat you pick up and put down, as and when you please, you know?... Hey, why dont you get your arse over here some time Si...would be a good laugh mate!.. Oh, im going to be fighting in a Boxing Tourny at 152lbs soon...its a three day event, basicly winner stays on type of thing...thought my ears and hands have had a beating enough with MMA, so though i would try and deaden a few "grey-cells" and see how i do...just hope i dont 'double-leg' someone!..lol. Jay.. Quote Link to post

Kye 77
Hi Millet,.. Yeah, your right about the time involved mate...i think that was one of the main reasons me mum and dad split to be honest....like i said though, 'maybe, one day!'...would be nice...probably be when im too fecked up to dig and had my arms broken a bunch!..lol. I would put a bunch of pics up Millet, but i dont have Net access at the house...im at the Wifes work place...maybe i might be able to get her (or my mate FR) to sling some pics up at some point?...im sure they would mind mate! Hi again Si... lol...great fight eh?...i like Herring, as a person...BUT...i would just WISH he would stop THINKING he is a good striker...he can punch and kick real hard, but his timing/footwork/accuracy is terrible!...he should just maul people and stick and upper body sub on people and be done with it!..LMAO!... Fun guy to watch fight though...always was better in "Pride"...must be the lack of Vitamin "S" doing him no good these days!?..lol. Jay,.. Quote Link to post
