bshadle 5
Been a while since I could get out, but had a decent morning. Dug two easy two-footers and got two groundhogs. Quote Link to post
rolly 0
Good work there. You got some rocky soil, glad it was only a 2 footer!! I hate our soil. Rock, clay, rock, rock, lots of rock and some clay. Only a few areas with good easy digging. Quote Link to post
bshadle 5
That area is right on the change from clay to shale here. Move 100 yards south or east and the digging's not bad. Even the shale wasn't bad that day since we've had a fair amount of rain. By August if we get our typical dry summer it'll be chip and scoop for even a two-footer. Quote Link to post
bluecollar 104
Looking good, What type of locater do you use? Quote Link to post
bshadle 5
Deben LRT. Finally saw one of the B&Fs in action a little bit ago though and they are impressive. Might have to look at them harder when it eventually comes time for replacement. Especially if they ever come out with their long-promised smaller version. Quote Link to post
wetdogsmell 99
good stuff bshadle do them groundhogs do much damage to terriers? Quote Link to post
Terrier man 38
WSD id reckon they do a bit but the dog looks like its a sounder/marker and the gh was shot then once broken in wish we had all them kinds of animals over here be some bang.. Quote Link to post

I have been looking at the ortovox transmitter and receiver and a pieps receiver.. My friend uses it and he likes it a lot. Transmitters are cheaper but the receiver is about the same as the B&F I think.. Quote Link to post
bshadle 5
wetdogsmell, groundhogs have chisels for teeth and can put a nasty slice to the dog if they get the chance. Most of the time it's a clean cut that's easy to treat though. A hard dog can take some stick from 'em, a soft dog far less. Terrier man, you're half right. The dog is a sounder/marker if I understand that term. She's fairly soft, and in nearly two years hasn't taken any stick from 'em yet. I prefer to think of it as smart, knowing to bite at the sh*ttin' end and bark at the bitin' end, but everyone has different preferences in dogs. The groundhogs weren't shot though, they were dispatched with a blow to the head from my trapper's trowel. First one tried to bolt as I opened on the tube, I grabbed it by the scruff and whacked it. Second one bolted as I was clearing the tube, came out with the dog gripping it by the back end and I grabbed it by the scruff as well. Another quick whack with the trowel ended that one too. When I whack 'em, I whack 'em. No point in half measures IMO. It sure is nice to have groundhogs to work all summer. You'd have a ball with 'em, but your farmers would probably be less than happy about 'em. bluecollar, I know some people who use the ortovox and speak highly of it. Ortovox and B&F both work on the same technology and frequency, and any of the standard avalanch locators will work with them. I've been told Pieps is a quality brand, and the same one used by B&F.
