Hell of a long shot, granted.

I'm trying to figure out which one it may be, so I can look for a Manual to it. Right now I can't even figure out how to get the HDD out, see?

Cheers for that, Speeds. And the person who PM'd me ;)

Well, I now know that it's a 5WV254. Only f*cker is, they offer a PDF full of bloody phone numbers, in place of a Manual. And, try as I might, I could find no leads to a Manual on Google either :wallbash: Oh well .....

Lablad; I simply want to know how to remove the HDD. I tried, but I'm f*cked if I could figure it out. Is there a screw I should be loosening, do ye know?

Sean; I'll have a look at that later, mate. Bit distracted right now. Cheers ;)

ditch there s most probably a small screw holding it somewhere that you have missed could be under the casing some of them are right ba%$£&ds to get out there may even be a small clip on the casing that holds all the drives in place undo that and they may all slide out for easier access . you dont half have some trouble with your computers .

Quite easy really. :)

Unplug machine

Take off case cover

If you dont know what a HDD looks like they are like metal boxes. (http://www.mattcutts.com/images/hard-drives.jpg)

These will be held in a 3.5" drive bay by little screws.

Remove IDE ribbon cabling.

Take out HDD

Are you replacing the HDD ?

:thumbs::thumbs::thumbs:

As far as I know the HD is poped out from the front of the machine, two sliding rails hold it in place, you may need to remove the front plastic front to get the HD out.

Think you are right LL, you have to remove the front cover of the unit to access the HD.

DS, I can get that sorted for you if you dont make progress yourself, I will be in Mohill on Friday night, so I will drop off another unit for you if you want, and pick up the old unit and wipe the HD and install XP. That unit you have is about ten year old, or more.

Let me know

John

 FFFS!!! I've just had Drives popping in and out like Mary f*cking Poppins could a chest of drawers here! Out the f*cking FRONT! :wallbash: Guys; I've simply never before come across a 'Front Loader'!

So, thanks for all the helpful suggestions. But the one about ripping the face of the bloody thing finally got me there. Took me about five minutes to manhandle and Opinel the face off, then two seconds to have the bloody HDD going in and out like a fiddlers elbow! :toast:

Well, that's That finally bloody sorted then. Thank f*ck for that. It was doing my head in completely! :D

IL; I'm quite sure it's only the HDD on this thing that's causing me any bother, mate. It seems RAM's still available for this model and a brand new HDD would be 'common sense' at this stage and its age. As soon as I get paid I'll try to get down to Longford and pick one up. I have an XP disc here for it. That's really all I need. I might even enquire about this vintage of RAM, as and when I'm there. Give the old girl a fresh lease of life. Otherwise, it's all over Google, so I'll have no trouble finding some.

Anyway; Your mate gave me a lift into town today! I was thumbing a lift at the crossroads. Motor pulls up and in I jump. First thing he says is, " I'm IL's mate. The bloke who dropped the pc off at the pub. " :icon_eek: We had a f*ckin good chat all the way in! He likes the grub you bring, when ye go fishing!

Glad you got it sorted. I will drop a HD into the pub for you on Friday, I am sure it will pop into your unit, fook it I will drop a whole unit in and you can play about for an hour or so with it. I will also drop in some ram, just might do your unit.

John

That would be Eric that gave you the lift, sound lad.

Actually, SS, ye about right, mate. In fact, I saw Johns response last night and was, quite honestly, too blown away to respond. How do ye respond to that sort of treatment? I'm simply not accustomed to such open handed generosity and so have no template for dealing with it. I've been trying to get my head round it all night and day. I only feel that all the " :signthankspin::notworthy::clapper::toast: " shit on the internet seems meaningless compared to the trouble this guy's putting himself too, for a complete stranger.

He's effectively kept me on line for a hell of a long time here. And on line is just about my life right now. If I went down, I'd be finished. John's kept me up. I owe the guy, big time.

It'd be good if John had family or good friends up here. Someone I could wish the biggest plague of rats on. Because then I could get over there and wipe the problem out for them. Sadly, that's about all I'm really good for.

But, what ever; If the man ever needs any favours he reckons I could sort out? He should Know it's as good as sorted. I'm as good as my word too.
