Grim Reaper 1
. . . Longish story, but I will try to shorten it a bit! Lol Basically, This will go to show that it is imperative that A) you should always have your grant of permission forms on you, or to hand (or at least in your car), and you really need to know your permssion grounds as thoroughly as you can! I had two seperate occurences today (meetings with people on my shoot) - a local farmer (who puts his sheep to graze on part of the shoot as a favour to my landowner), and a senior member of the crematorium staff (who lives on-site). The farmer arrived in the field with his sheep, and so i emptied my rifle and made safe (and put it away somewhere) and went over to him and introduced myself. We had a lengthy chat and it turns out i may get an offer of permission from him for his farm, which is very local to the crem. This would be very cool! He also trusts me enough to shoot in the same field as his sheep - I was very impressed by this. The member of crem staff (together with his son) then arrived about 5 mins later, and walked over to me with his shotty on view (which was closed and ready to hand in case) so i again made safe and put down my air rifle, and waited for him to approach me (I don't mind admitting that I was now feeling a bit edgy!! ). He asked me the usual stuff - what are you doing, who are you etc., and was satisfied with my answers. At this stage he then broke down his shotty and made safe - for which I was eternally gratefull i can tell you! lol I showed him my forms, and showed him where i park my car, what my car is etc., and he then chatted to me for almost an hour - the result of which is he wants to let me know when he is organising a major vermin blatting session at the crem and will want me to come with my shotty too - result!! Now even though we had been advised of eachother's existance other by the crem superintendant, and have been looking out for each other - until today our paths have never crossed, believe it or not? I can not stress enough how important it is that you know your onions well, with regards to your 'shoots'- in this case, my knowledge of the crem grounds, my permission grant form, as well as the information contained in my shooting file saved my arse from some buckshot - his first thought was that i was one of the troublesome pikeys that have nicked some land next door to the crem, and come there paoching without permission, like. Please be careful people, and safe shooting to you all, Grim. Edited June 22, 2008 by Grim Reaper Quote Link to post

You can never know who you will come across on a shoot, and so you can never be too carefull. Just goes to show that we are always being watched while we are out and about at our game. Cheers, Grim. Holdaway 2
I want to congratulate you on YOUR behaviour. Unloading or making safe is the FIRST thing you do when you see someone. I understand the Supers actions a little, but I used to carry a shotgun and always unloaded first, by all means keep it closed so the person/s you are talking to don't know that you are not ready for anything, but one complaint, one misfire, one anything and bang goes your license or worse. Well Done on knowing your stuff. H Quote Link to post

H Cheers! I'm just glad that matters didn't move on from civil greetings and talk - thats why i made damn sure he saw me unload my air rifle magazine, empty the barrel into the ground, and put the rifle down on the ground. I also thought it was better to let him come to me - it hopefully showed him that he was in control of the situation. At that point, his shotgun was closed and i wasn't arguing! lol All the best, Terry / Grim Quote Link to post
