Had the same dilema myself two years ago. Mature buck with deformed antler. Upon closer inspection the scull was all infected around the correnet. I stalked him for nearly two hours whilst he went from stand to stand being pushed about by the other bucks. Just too painfull to fight. But he never stopped trying. The will to breed I supose. Anyway when I did get the shot it was very satisfying to see him on the ground when I could have taken the greedy option and had any of his counterparts.

Right decision mate, keep making them and you'll feel good about what you do every time you pick up the rifle. :cheers:
