kvnmcwebn 0
Gorse is reclaiming a lot of land around here, theres literally acres of it. And theres a lot of fox now as well. In a an area like this were a fox could run into a half an acre of gorse where a man could not go is it even possible to hunt with dogs? If dogs than what type would you use to get them out of the cover. You would not want a terrier to go to ground in there. I think youd need something tough with a good nose and not to big and youd need a pack of them. what do you all think? Edited June 9, 2008 by kvnmcwebn Quote Link to post
whip 1
i used to hunt in the staffordshire moorland where there is extensive gorse(manifold valley etc), used welsh foxhounds with plenty of coat they used to crash through it, a bit hard headed but great in that country. Quote Link to post
kvnmcwebn 0
How many hounds did you have/take out with you? The beagle or begle/x would be a good wee dog for it/wouldnt go to ground in the middle of it. I suppose its an advantage to something that bays in that situation. Quote Link to post

FLATCAP 6
terriers or springerxbeagles work well in hard cover YOU TOOK THE WORDS OUT ME MOUTH THERE MATE Quote Link to post
kvnmcwebn 0
burn the bushes Theres a bit burning going on but its really smoky and the firedepartment comes . There was a big fire half the townland was covered in smoke, stuff burns like matches. A farmer told me when you burn it it only comes back worse. Maybe cause it grows faster than other stuff. Field beside me was cleared of hawthorn 2 years ago its half full of waist high gorse now. It spreads like a weed. Quote Link to post

Guest whitser
get a small pack of hounds or hound x's, like hound cross terriers or springers. they're ideal for that sort of cover. i woudnt put a terrier in there cos if he goes to ground you might not find him again. i hunt some land with acres of gorse and its great to hear the hounds screaming from one end to the other after a fox. i love putting my harriers into cover like that, easy to hunt a line in open fields but gorse is a great test for the harriers. Guest whitser
burn the bushes dont burn the gorse its good to have good fox holding cover like that on your permission. Quote Link to post
kirstysdad 827
springer x terrier or springer xbeagle that will make some noise and cuts out the chance of a pure terrier going to ground somewhere were it would be hard to get to you will need a few lads with lurchers or guns to surround such a big bit of cover so you dont miss to many dont burn good holding cover hard enough to find Quote Link to post
