Kye 77
Our dogs get some time off this time of year...maybe a walk down the lane if its cool in the mornings/evenings....the sighthounds are kept on leash though, deer everywhere, and in the weather we get in the summer (-90F and 70-% humidity) if a deer takes them a field or so the dog could be in big trouble....all our dogs get to swim everyday and play and run with each other on property, which is about 5 1/2 acres....late september they get it stepped up, both terriers and sighthounds, even more so this year as we will hopefully be hitting the barns a little more, and hopefully we will have a Rig (coyote hunting truck), so that will mean lots more work....when in full swing, the big dogs get about 25 miles at night, plus heavyily worked...the raod work is more to toughen the pads on the dogs to be honest as we have lots of ice/hard weather...if its to bad you cant run the dogs, but you would be surprised how much even a little frost cant hurt big heavy type dogs. Guest Taffybull
i must agree with paul on this one.. the dogs are not as fit through out the summer as they are at winter when the work kicks in. im NOT saying that the dogs are un fit out of season.. its just that they are not as fit in summer as in winter IMO.. long walks and runns doesn't equal.. a good couple of runs on tricky terrain a night/day.. and multiple times a week.. as i sed.. that my opinion Taff Quote Link to post
Guest lurcherboy2008
i still do alot of bushing through the summer in the late evenings or early mornings just to keep the dogs happy, fit and still on top form of their jobs, terriers have alot of fun in the bushes with the cover thicker and the smaller rabbits with less scent gives them a right run-round also the lurchers love it too, circling the cover and some stretches when a brave rabbit crosses a field is nice to see now and again in the summer too, aslong as they get plenty of water and its not too hot im happy to still be bushing just nothing like the winter when your out on the cold frosty morning with the ferret nets shovels boxes and dogs theres nothing like it, oh forgot to say too these summer nights are shit with the lgihter nights, hotter nights, most fields are up, also alot of young livestock around, much prefer the winter lamping nights these summer nights Edited June 1, 2008 by lurcherboy2008 Quote Link to post
