brecon3 13
well iv just come back from work experience and i was staying with family friends now in the evening i found out that their youngest (who was 18) had an air gun (cometa 220 0.22) and i asked him if i could try and do some can killing then i saw some bunnies on his land and thought i would try to stalk them this was my first proper hunt ,i got within about 40 yds and know from practice that this was an oldish gun and wasent that powerful. anyway i had to get a lest 10yds closer and the only way to get closer with out them seeing me was through a bramble bush so i made my way throught this as quietly as i could and had my first shot at an adult but it was a fair way out and i knew that it would be a tricky shot so i squezed the trigger BANG it hit the floor in front of it that one ran off then i saw a youngster and cocked and loaded the gun as quietly as i could (they are sooo loud when you are trying to be silent)anyway i socked this one in neck and the adrenilin when it rolled over was someting else i climbed over the fence to find it and it was gone then i saw someting move in the nettles and did a follow up shot in head from point blank range and that was it my first rabbit .wow the bunnie bashing bug has bit me.it is in the pot now and i am just wondering how to tan the skin so that i can keep the fur on it if any one has got any tips then please help thanks in advance . brecon3 Quote Link to post
ChrisJones 7,975
I'm sure that someone with far more experience, than I, would step up and give you some tips on preparing pelts. One thing I will say, though, is next time you go hunting make sure you have a rifle that will ensure a clean kill. You owe it to your quarry. If you can't chronograph it, to make sure it's of sufficient power to kill outright, then stick to paper targets and tin cans. Quote Link to post

With all due respect, i think you just bewildered him with all those words . Chronograph, Quarry, for petes sake its his first time! I agree you should have enough power in your gun to kill the animal cleanly (note the SIMPLE words ), but he did kill it, quite quickly i would imagine seing as he hit tin the neck and it was dead. Brecon, good luck and keep hunting! Luke. Quote Link to post
brecon3 13
i know what you mean and i do think it does have just enough power to kill one as the lad who owned the gun has shot rabbits before it is just because in needed a bit more practice its just it was a spuer of the moment thing and i really wanted to shoot one if i had hit it in the head i think it would hav been a outright kill and i did do a follow up shot as fast as i could to end the suffering as its not fair on the quarry brecon3 Quote Link to post

Brecon, good luck and keep hunting! Luke. I take the business of killing things very seriously and I'm sorry if this sounds blunt but I don't think someone should even pick up a rifle if they don't know what quarry and chronograph mean and then proceed to start on live game. That's not going to sit well with people but what's the point of an opinion board if you can't have one? Nobody kills everything 100% of the time. Those that say so are liars. The point is to narrow the odds of injury and wounding. Some see it as "Well it's only a rabbit" or "It's only a rat" I don't. Natural selection gave us these abilities, civilisation gave us informed choices. I'm made up for Brecon. It's his/her first taste of the sport but if me being a dick, on the forum, means that next time he/she, or anyone else thinks, before blindly picking up a rifle and having a pop at the local wildlife, then I'll stick with it... The c*** that I am. Times are changing. Chances are in the next few years you won't be able to even look at a rifle before knowing what a chronograph is. Why wait until it's forced? Brecon. Keep it up. Your peers demand it. Quote Link to post
