FELL OR PATTERDALE?

Recommended Posts

I know an old terrierman who has this wierd quirk. I showed him my two black terriers, and when he saw the bitch he said "that's got patterdale in it" I thought WTF is he going on about?

He says this a lot, and it really has baffled me. I thought they were one and the same thing???

My dog is a taller rough type (N Stevens, Parks /Wheeler) and my bitch is a small smooth big headed type. (Nuttall/ Brightmore mix)

Can anyone help as this has done me head right in :wallbash: Ta

i was told by an old terrier man that fells are rough haired and patterdale were the smooth

Its got nowt to do with the coat (rough/smooth)

Most terrier men up here will call owt with mixed blood or not of a recognised breed a 'fell' . Most border/lakie types and patterdale lookin' things get called 'fell' terriers in this area.

But the patterdales are not just a fell type anymore, they are more a breed in thier own right, and the name patterdale has stuck, might as well have a name. (just guessing that its because early specimens of the type were from that area).

It all depends on the person who keeps the dogs.

I class them all as fells, in the same litters of evan close bred lines you will get smooths and coated dogs.

Going to shows and you will see dogs from the same owner, same litter or line in differant clsses.

Does it realy matter, what someone calls them ?

I think naming something is just a shorthand thing. give it a name and instantly you know without a lenghty description what is being described. If i said I'd got a blue hatch back car, it could be any blue, shape, etc but if I said a new corsa you'd instantly know what it looked like (assuming you knew about cars that is). just my opinion.
