A ferretty rant

Recommended Posts

It has been a bit of a mad year for me this year. Moving house and setting up camp further up the valley. With all of my dogs to think about and pups in the pipeline, my thoughts were on them and making sure that they had comfortable accomodation.

I didnt think I would have had the chance to breed off one of the ferrets, as I didnt own a hob. We managed to get by through the season, with two jills. One, vastly better than the other, but identical in apearance.

Anyway when I was finally settled in, I soon realised that my team of ferrets was in much need of replenishment. So, as I had recently joined the hunting life, and had no working hob to hand, I posted a topic asking for help. Fortunately for me, Ferretville off this site had a good working male, and he was a short drive from home, Brilliant!

So six weeks ago I headed over with my young cousin, to get the better of the two jills lined. As they looked identical, I thought we should do a couple of warrens on some permision on the way over, to make sure we picked the good'un. All went well and we marked the bad ferret with a little spray of teramycin. Well, the hob wasted no time, and had the job done in about 20 minutes! If that bugger bolts rabbits as efficiently as it lines a jill, then it wouldnt leave you waiting about for long!!

Got home, sorted the dogs, had some tea, went out to feed the ferrets and noticed that a piece of ply had come away at the back of the hutch!! :icon_eek: And both ferrets had escaped!! :o We looked on the surveilance tapes, which showed both leaving the farmyard in opposite directions!

I set a few live catch traps, but as day turned to night I called off my ferret hunt, hoping for better luck in the morning.

The next morning I checked the traps, no success! But as I lifted the last of them I heard a bloody great screach from the yard! I ran out, to find my (supposedly ferret broken) lurcher had nailed one of the jills, and on hearing my approach had tossed it away and it lay cowering under the shed. I managed to catch it, and put it back into its, now mended hutch.

And as I was thinking 'Few, That was lucky' I saw the other jill in my landlords kennel, dead! Must have come back through the night and went to say hello to the dogs.

The problem now, was we didnt know if we had the good jill or the crap one as the mark had worn off! :hmm:

We had our fingers crossed for the next week hoping to see the jill come out of season, and, She Did!! :toast::boogie:

The jill dropped her litter on Friday morning, looks to be a lot of them, im guessing 10-12 ish.

So a bit of a bumpy ride but a good result in the end. Many thanks to Ferretville for the help he gave us! :drink:

Hope I get a few good workers for the comming season

Heres a pic of the litter

Cheers FV.

You gotta look on the bright side of things, at least I dont have to look for a new home for the crap one now! !

Pretty hectic time that was! Not good for the 'crap' ferret hey?! but at least we have the good one and all the new kits here with us.

I'm going to keep one of the hobs i think, if thats alright?

No bother, free to good working homes! Like I said in the post, I think theres 10 to 12 kits there, im keeping 2 or 3, and have good homes ready for another 3. So thats 6 or 7 with homes so far.

Looks like theres going to be some albino, some dark and some silvery... we'll have to wait and see.
