1st fox when out rabbiting

Recommended Posts

went out rabbiting last night with my mate and brother to see if we could get a good bag of rabbits. his land is packed with them so i thought we where in for a big bag. but the rabbits where very shy and the weather wasnt the best the sky was very clear and there wasnt any wind so it was silent. we saw a fair amount bout as we took it in turns we only got 5 in the end i wasnt bothered as we got out for a couple of hours. and we had 30 mins just on a target board to see if the rifles where ok. my hmr and 22lr was hitting the bull time and time again and so was my mates 22lr.

at the end of the night i gutted the rabbits and we where just chatting away packed the rifles away and was just about to leave but my mate had a quick look with the lamp and there in the field was a fox about 170 yards. my mate called and it came in to about 110 yards. i went round the back of the 4x4 got my hmr back out and loaded up. i git on the back of the 4x4 so the rifle was on the roof. the fox was just sat there about 100 to110 yards. i was sure i could take him but i no he was intrested in the call so i had a go on the wam i had. my mate turned the lamp off and put it back on the fox was into 55 yaards by then. i was ready on the rifle and new that was a good range to take a head shot so as he look left a little i shot him in the side of the head it went down on the spot and didnt even move.

i ws very pleased as this is the 1st fox ive ever shot so to get one was very good and i was happy i was a instant kill which is allways good  here is the picture

Well done! Just goes to show the hmr *is* ok for fox at the right range and with a well placed shot. My only query would be, (and I'm raising it because I simply don't know), does the amount of blood mean its heart was still pumping for a bit after it was shot only I haven't seen a bleeder like this before? Does this happen the same way with a larger calibre?

Anyway, well done again mate! :clapper:

You'll usually get a lot of blood with a headshot. The few I've hit in the head with my .22lr have bled profusely but were dead before they knew anything had happened.

well done mate........you can clearly shoot well but why shoot head shots when theres no intention of eating it, it increases the chances of wounding and missing........engine room every time if i can see it headshots as last resort

Well done jamie, I bet you were chuffed to bits, its satisfying to shoot the first one, I can just about remember mine.

I have a HMR and it does the job on foxes in the right circumstances.

One reason I can think of dicky is that the bullet placement with a rimfire needs to be exact, if you know where the vital organs are on a fox and you are supremely confident of hitting it then fine, but seen as jamie has not shot foxes before the headshot is the most humane option, if he misses then he misses, there is no loss but if he hits it in the guts and missed heart or lungs it would bleed to death a lot slower. He was confident of where the rifle was shooting and so so took the decision to take a head shot and carried it out with the desired result.

P.S jamie, this is not a scurge on your integrity just a good justification for a headshot.

hi mate i took the head shot as from what i have heard from other people that have shot foxes with hmr in the body it doesnt allways kill them out right. and as its a small bullet i dont think you can be sure of it ripping into the engine room as well as say a centrefire would. i went for the head as i no as long as the fox is side on a little it hmr will do a good amount of damage to the fox. so in my eyes is more humane the fox was still to when i took the shot and was relaxed. i have shot man rabbits out over 100 yards though the head so a foxes head is a very easy target in my eyes up to 100 yards. the was a lot of bolld but from the moment i took the shot. to the fox dropping my mate had the lamp on it and it didnt move a inch

thats fine ss  i no what you mean mate  i would only ever shoot foxes with the hmr in the head your right inless you can be sure where to body shot them you run the risk of them getting away hurt. in my eyes the hmr bullet is to hit and miss for body shots all the time. ive seen a fox hit with a 222 and that was though the engine room. yet the fox still ran for 40 to 50 yards ! then when down. i guess its adrenlin but in my eyes because the 222 bullet is alot more powerfull then hmr that fox wouldnt have gone anywhere because of the damage from it. where as if that was the case of the hmr hitting it he would have gone more then 40 to 50 yards. if in open field then you would find it but in a field close to a tree line you mite not have found him ;)

once i get the 22/250 i have the slot for this will do the job i guess :whistling::icon_eek::thumbs:

Nice one Jamie,I have taken countless foxes over the years with the rimfire(.22lr)and,every one was a head shot, and,I can safely say that not one went anywhere bar straight down. The key is to get them in close, and,in my opinion that is the skill............................Martin.
