newbie with a good question

Recommended Posts

basically i am a keen air rifle shooter on a lot of local land helping the farmers out with vermin control . But i am thinkin of upgrading to a fac rifle but heres the question

1) .22 lr . or 017hmr

is there any difficulty between gettin the hmr? or the .22

does the allowed land have to be different ?bigger ?

are there many differences in performance / power / accuraccy?

is there a difference in price !

sorry for stupid questions but im new to the facs

A .22 LR, a .22WMR, a Mach 2, a 17HMR ...........a .308, etc, etc are tools that do a job, look at the land, look at the quarry, look at the job you need to do and select the appropriate tool for the job!

A 17HMR isn't BETTER that a 22LR and vice versa...they are different!

Comparing the HMR to the .22lr, the HMR will be... More expensive to feed ammo, louder, safer in that the HMR doesn't ricochet nearly as much, you'll have to do less thinking about bullet drop also.

For fox you should think about getting a centrefire rifle, proper tool for the job  HMR will kill fox in the right conditions, but with much less of a margin for error.

ok cheers mostly rabbits and the odd fox and the land all tends to sweep up hill slightly what would you reccomend

ok keefyc ill chip in with my two bobs worth,as deker and john g have pointed out but what i will say is dont ,when you apply for your f.a.c request the 22. or the 17 hmr for shooting foxes.your f.l.o.[firearms liason officer] will tell you thats a no-no!

you say your land sweeps up hill but it is also sweeps down hill when your at the top!you need to prove your competant to own a firearm before you actually own one.

ita really easy for us "veterans" to give this advice but we have all been in that boat your in now.is the land passed for firearms use? if not thats your starting point.you need the f.a.o to visit and check it out if its declined then you need to get more land and repeat the process if your determined you will get what you want, but you have to put a lot of work in.

until you get past the first hurdle i wouldnt worry about what rifle to apply for.

keep us posted. :drink:

ok mate, i'd get the land approved first as gary states, As without land to shoot on, your limited to a rifle range.

As for the questions, .22 lr advantages, cheap ammo, quite when a moderater is fitted, with do vermin control for rabbits excellently, fox at close range, bad points not as accurate as the hmr and you will be shooting at shorter distances than you could dowith the hmr. Also the bullets can ricochett due to sub sonic speeds.

Hmr advantages, longer range capabilities, more accurate, with practise you could shoot rabbits at 200 yards, ok for close fox work but still not ideal. 100 yards max

disadvantages, louder even with a moderater, cost of ammo.............good luck
