Good evening :)

Recommended Posts

Out this evening with Deker, after deer mainly.

Headed out to one of my permissions, where there are always deer, and they're pretty tolerant normally. We took them for granted first time round and they disappeared. Deker knocked over a crow in the meantime and we went off in search of deer at one of his permissions.

No joy there, so we came back, having left things to quieten in the meantime. Got back and plenty of deer, but they were a way off and it was dusk by then. Headed over and got close enough for a shot, and they ran round us and got quite a way away.

However, one finally stopped and presented nicely so I squeezed the trigger. Both of us thought I missed, the bullet took what seemed like an age to get there. But when it did, THUMP! Deer went straight over. Paced the shot to 256 yards. That was my second deer. Used a 58gr Vmax on him, which I was somewhat dubious about beforehand. After gralloching, we found the bullet, it never made it through, but fragmented perfectly - went all the way through the deer, stopped just on the far side under the skin, in several fragments. I guess that explains why he went over so quick.

After we finished gralloching, headed back and I swapped the 243 for the rimfire and Deker stayed with his 223. Lamps ready, we headed back out, to see what would turn up. As soon as we got back out, saw Charlie, and Deker shot him at 150 yards, leaning on a gate. Foxy ran 20 yards before collapsing, we both thought he'd missed for a minute until we found the body.

We had a mooch about after that and I knocked over a bunny to finish the evening (although annoyingly I fluffed that and it took 3 shots :().

All told, a pretty good evening :)

Yep..the boy done good :notworthy: ..but that's the idea, for some strange reason the police have made me his Deer Mentor so there is not a lot of point in me shooting them when we go out, (but it's hanging in MY shed now!! ), however, he very kindly let me shoot the fox!

The deer was a great shot, you had to see it, it was like slow motion, he was dead before he fell down, not a kick or twitch, the ammo worked really well!

Cheers
