giving up

Recommended Posts

I was told by someone from another forum to put this post on here.So this is it.

As I have tried all the farmers around here To find somewhere to shoot my air rifle without success I am giving up .So its back up in the loft for my Mercury. The reason I will find it hard is that my wife works funny shifts(shes a bus driver)So she works lots of weekends and I have to look after my 2 boys. Why I was after somewhere local was after I had dropped the boys off at school I could then do a few hours shooting untill I had to pick them up again. It meant that I could only do a few weekends and a few days during the school holidays when my wife had her days off.At least that was the plan but as shooting is so popular now it is pretty near impossable to find anywhere nowadays. Not like the old days.Still such is life.Bob

Badger Bob hi

have you considered looking out any airgun clubs in your area, some clubs are often approached by farmers for help with pest control or you could post an advert in the countrymans weekly or similar, offering your services

good luck

Don't give up.

With regard to getting land, like you, I found sending out letters and just knocking on farmers doors didn't get much response, frequently only 'we've already got someone' or the like. So I changed the approach to finding shoots for, in my case, rabbits, as follows:

1. Find somewhere that there are loads of rabbits (or woodies or whatever you want to shoot). Get an OS map of your area if you haven't got one, and over a period of weeks, walk every public footpath and bridleway (preferably at dawn or dusk) looking for rabbits or signs of warrens, or adapt this to suit the habitat and habits of your intended quarry.

2. When you find somewhere with loads of them, find out who the land belongs to.

3. Go and knock on the door (not dressed in camo!), introduce yourself with a line something like 'I couldn't help noticing there are loads of rabbits on your land, and I wondered if you needed any help controlling them'.

Whilst you very occasionally get a 'No' answer, more often than not, you get a 'Yes', because you have taken the trouble to look and find someone who has a problem that they need help to sort out.

It has worked wonders with me - if I counted the number of shoots I have acquired that way, it would number over a dozen.

Good luck with getting a shoot, and good hunting. Above all, don't give up!

Very best wishes

MM
