can a dogs sperm be colected and stored and be used for future breeding.To keep the gene pool going,by artifical insemination

course it can be stored.look at all the greyhounds that are being inseminated now.sperm is being sent over from austrailia.i know one dog that died 2 years ago and pups are being still bred from his sperm.

Cryogenic sperm freezing is possible but you or who needs very much to know what they are doing (you can do a A.I.course) but it can be very, very expensive!!! Its getting more and more common, but the kennel club for instance do not allow A.I. pups a pedigree and insist on natural matings.

Theres a lad on here who put a good post on the old patt site about it think theres plenty do it but the vets haven t a clue and charge the earth from what i gather.

I don't know what it is in the UK but in the US (8 years ago at least) it cost $350 to collect, and another $60 per year to store. I have a few breedings worth stored of a good dog I had that I now don't have any bitches to use on, and it is coming to the end of it's "shelf life" ... so if you do it, be thinking of bitches down the road to use it on. Probably if you do a search online for "semen collection" or "canine breeding", something should pop up.
