Head Shots and Guaranteed Kills etc...

Recommended Posts

Hello all, i dont want this to sound a daft question but how far away do you think i could risk being to kill a rabbit with a head shot with my daystate X2 sports, .22 calibre?

What about birds too, like maggies/crows etc.

When ive shot rats/maggies etc before ive only been about 10-20 feet away so not really an issue with killing them from that range.

And also where is the best part of the head to get a rabbit (or bird) ? Ive been told to aim for the eye, is this correct?

Thanks all,

Gaz

depends on how confident you are with your shots but i allways stick to 20-40 yards but usially just 30yrds also dont aim for the eye go for the back of the eye or the base off the ears were i usially go for...

good luck...

hello mate.......i have always shot betwen the eye and the base of the ear or just in front of shoulders ( lungs and heart)....at 35 yards max, you should NOT shoot them anywhere else!!!!!!!!!! Birds are head or neck shots as far as i am aware but hopefully some of the more experienced fellas will advise on this one..........good luck mate and happy hunting!!!!!!

Both well said.

If too close the pellet will go straight through the body with little enough damage to bring the animal/bird down.

Rabbits head, neck and chest only. Birds, head, neck, and throat, (just above the crop between the breast bone or 'keel'.

Crows have the stiffest feathers of the vermin, pigeon well padded but very good penetration, magpies, easy and jays are nothing but fluff.

Good hunting.

Thanks very much for replys. Just what i needed to hear.

I once had a crafty shot at a pigeon from about 20 feet (7 yards) and got it in the throat, it was instantly out of its misery :-)

Just wanted to know what you all had to say on the subject.

Cheers All.

Hi Gaz, there's only one person that can truely answer your questions, you.

Get yourself out there with some targets and find out what your groupings are like at different distances.

For instance set your zero at 35 yards, once you are happy with it find out where your grouping at 40 yards then 45 yards if you can't keep the grouping tight then you shouldn't be taking shots at live quarry at that distance.

Hey, my problem/question wasnt to do with the accuracy of my shot. I was referring more to the power at further distance.

For example if assuming at 45 yards i can get a perfect head shot, would there still be enough power to kill?

How far could you go before the impat is lessened due to distance?

That is sort of what i was getting at but thanks for reply.

GD; Take a tip from one who found out .....

Never shoot a bird that's sitting more or less directly above ye in the neck.

I did that once. Feral pigeon on a high window sill.

Bloody thing dropped onto my upturned face. Wings a flapping and blood a gushing!

I wasn't a happy bunny!

Sorry mate,I must have picked you up wrong.Don't know how. :hmm: Above is your original question and there is no mention of power there.

My answer would still be the same. The gun if full power,11 to 12ft/lb will have enough power to kill a rabbit at 50 yards if you have the accuracy to hit it in the right place.

But even though the gun has the power to kill at that distance if you cannot put all your pellets inside a 1p piece sized circle you should not be firing it at live quarry at that distance.

Hey again tote, i see where your coming from and apologise about how i worded the questions. Thats one thing i hate about forums, im thinking one thing in my head and it comes out different on the screen. Its the same when people start arguing/banter-ing, you cant tell between sarcasm and anger etc.

Again sorry about that.

I see what your saying, and the 50 yard figure is alot more than i thought, thats why i wanted to ask the question, i wouldnt be shooting from that far at all.

Obviously im not saying im a perfect shot, and there is always room for improvement but im comfortable at a 1p size grouping at say 25-30 yards so will stick with that for now.

Thanks for the help
