Minimum age to try a rimfire?

Recommended Posts

I was having a chat with a colleague the other day, he has two boys, one of whom is about 8-9 and would love to try shooting.

Personally I don't have an issue letting him blat a tin can with my rimfire, I'm quite happy to introduce youngsters to the sport, it helps for the future! But, is there a legal minimum age for letting someone have a few shots?

big debate this. some say you cant use others rifles inless its a estate rifle.

i dont see what the harm of it is really? you set the young lad up in a safe place and watch over him when shooting.

what harm is that i think its good for the young lads to find out about shooting and safety.

on land you have permission over is the harm hey ;) just keep it to yourself  then there is no harm done

Thanks Jamie. The official standpoint from the BASC for adults is that no problem, rifles are fine under supervision (and that can be the other side of the field for lamping). I might give them a call and find out what happens when the child is 9...

From the Gun Control Network (of all places!!)

Children and Guns

Current laws allow children of any age to use guns in clubs and on private land. There is no minimum age limit for this which is surprising given the killing power of the gun. The new government proposals do not address this problem except to a very limited extent in relation to the unsupervised use of airguns.

Amazingly ironic that the antis contribute to helping us out for once :)
