Ammo variance between boxes?

Recommended Posts

I was out tonight with the Hornet, I zeroed it earlier with the fag end of a box of ammo. It was spot on then, and two bunnies in 10 minutes this evening, it was spot on ce soir as well.

But... I then changed boxes and missed everything. Frustrated, I whacked a target up and found that it was 2 inches high. re-zeroed and then whacked a fox. Missed a couple of rabbits as well, but unlike the earlier ones I wasn't happy with the shots. Earlier, I had had the crosshair on skull and got off perfect shots only to see a terrified bunny rabbit pegging it.

Is it normal to have that much variance? Or rather, is it possible? Because I've not found it before so by definition it's not normal :)

Total 3 confirmed rabbits and one fox, not too bad a night.

Hollow point ammo now, and straight down, so I was much happier than with the softpoints, which weren't so good. 243 is still much more final, though.

Are the batch numbers the same on each box? Had this problem with 22rim once. Now I re-zero every time I start a new batch of ammo, it pays in the long run just as you start a new box when you are out it gives you confidence when you take a shot.

Back in the early 90's some of the .22Winchester sub-sonics seemed to have a life of their own. Some would crack near as loud as High velocities and fly straight over the zero, others would pootle off.It was only the odd shot that really played about but some batches were worse than others. Our ammo was paid for by the Boss ,hence bought in bulk which was a bit of a mistake as we were stuck with it.I think we bought our own Eleys in the end .It was a confidence thing.
