lorelei0922 2
Hi, My husband was interested in getting a couple ophaned lambs and feeding them up for christmas time.... we were wondering though what rules and regulations are there as to how they are kept and what we need to do DEFRA wise or what have you to make them acceptable at the abbatoir ? We aren't interested in doing anything shady, and probably wont bother at all if its too complicated .... just looking for a bit of advise really thanks Heather
Tis TM 8
Hi, My husband was interested in getting a couple ophaned lambs and feeding them up for christmas time.... we were wondering though what rules and regulations are there as to how they are kept and what we need to do DEFRA wise or what have you to make them acceptable at the abbatoir ? We aren't interested in doing anything shady, and probably wont bother at all if its too complicated .... just looking for a bit of advise really thanks Heather I'm not entirley sure what you have to do legally, but I think anyone can keep a sheep if they want to. My aunty has two pet sheep, and no holding number etc. I think it would be wise though just to contact your local animal health office (link): http://www.defra.gov.uk/Animalhealth/about...lth-offices.htm ... and just notify them that you are keeping sheep at your address. I think given the circumstances surrounding foot and mouth outbreaks, it would be the responsible thing to do.... Its easy to get a holding number if you wish, and you can be registered as keeping "petstock" rather than comercial livestock rearing, so you wont be bombarded with a forests worth of paperwork!! Hope this helps
scottishlass 57
Its a bit of a grey area, you should be able to keep them as pets and feed them up for xmas time but if you go to the abbatoir i am sure they will be have to registered and tagged if you are friendly with your local butcher have a word with him to see what he can do saves all the red tape
DIGZY 4
I have done this a few times it brakes youre heart at the time they have got to be registered and tagged with the farmers own ID tag . Let the farmer put a spray die on them and he tells them at the abbatoir that he wants to collect the two or one with the die on them
Simoman 110
You MUST register with DEFRA and apply for a herd/holding number. You must also keep accurate records and ensure your sheep are ear tagged, the paperwork should be simple if you only have a couple but I gaurentee you they WILL check at some point. woodga 170
the performance for dealing with the abbatoirs is hard enough just to get an end user ticket you have forms to fill and have a holding number and have a visit from the defra vet just to see where your keeping the feed, keep records of dealings ect ect or you could be liable to a £1000 fine oh the joys of keeping dogs dont we just love it give defra a ring and find out the rules first mate imho that would be best
