HI Mate i have heard that 204 bullet travels at about 3800/4000 ft per sec therefore at these velocities if you are using a soft point round it could be possible for the bullet to pass through flesh and not cause too much internal damage or shock to the nervous system, Try using a v max, or hollow point round these should expell most of their energy inside your target.

Good Hunting :victory:

as keith pointed out a soft point will not dump all its energy into a fox hence the pass through.i take it you mean 40gn not 40gram.is it factory ammo or your own?if factory try the 32vmax or 40vmax these will drop a fox on the spot, the 32gn will give you 4000-4150fps not whats stated on the box the 40gn will give you 3750-3900fps.

did you find resistance when you closed the bolt? the 204 has a tendency to have a short throat, this is good for home loading but not for factory ammo. you will have a accurate gun there but to wring the best out of it you need to homeload. if not try a few variations of factory ammo but i suspect you will get best accuracy with hornady ammo.

keep us posted of your results any questions just ask. :thumbs-up:

HI GARYW.

THANKS FOR INFO.WHAT IM USING AT THE MOMENT IS HORNADY 40 GR VMAX FACTORY AMMO I HAV EVER DONE HOMELOADING. YA I AM FINDING A BIT OF RESISTANCE WHEN CLOSING THE BOLT?WHAT DOES THIS MEAN.WHAT DOES SHORT THROAT MEAN.. GUN IS SPOT ON SHOOTING BULL ON TARGETS NO PROB.FIRED A BREAST SHOT AT FOX LAST NIGHT 100 YARDS AWAY DID NOT HOLD HIM.CONFIDENCE STARTING TO GO . NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM WITH .243 SHOOTING FOXES 300 YARDS NO SWEAT..I HAVE A SOUND MODERATOR FITTED TO .204 BUT I PRESUME THIS SHOULD CAUSE NO PROBLEMS.

as mr logic stated a 40 vmax should drop charlie in his tracks can you borrow a chronograph and see what the velocitys are for your ammo.i doubt its this though! does your ammo gain vertical when shot on paper?

as mr logic also stated only hornady at this time make factory ammo this was a shrewd move by both ruger and hornady they knew they could sell factory fodder till the homeloading boys got hold of some brass and dies.

more factory ammo should be available as more guns are produced.as your in cork i doubt you can home load? if you can invest in some dies and use the brass your firing at the moment.the gun will shoot better with homeloads and the throat reamed out with a custom reamer this will allow the bullets that are in the 20 calibre range to be used to there full potential.

you asked about the throat well to put it simply its where when you close the bolt the bullett head enters just prior to the rifling.why ruger did this with the short throat no one really knows.a lot of knowledgable rifle buffs reckon its to do with the factory ammo which makes a lot of sense, you would want folks to buy your ammo for your rifles !

i toyed with the idea of a custom 204. but instead went with a custom tactical20 this is based on the 223 case reformed with dies and fireformed .the brass is the best lapua match and there is a good range of bullet weights and manufactures to choose from.

if you cant reload then in afraid your down to 2 options.1/put up with what you have and see if the rifle meets your expectations.

2/ chop the rifle in for something else that has a good range of factory ammo available.

good luck anyway

Hi. I use hornady 32grain and have not seen a fox take a breath after being hit by it. Shot one recently at 170 odd yards saw the strike through the scope and it dropped on the spot. Sorry your not having the same experiences nightvision. Am very surprised to hear it
