I'm hoping you kind chaps and chapesses can help me out here, Im interested to know the longevity of working lurchers in general compared with the average lifespans of non working breeds, after a discussion I had with a lady today who keeps Airedales and commented they never seem to survive past the age of 12 despite being one of the healthier type breeds with few hereditary problems :icon_eek: This set me thinking about working lurchers and how barring injuries, they can be one of the healthiest types of dog you can own.

So, can you all take a minute to vote on the age of your oldest dog when it died, if you can add some comments about what age you retired the dog and what the cause of death was, whether old age, heart failure, kidney trouble etc.

I know some of you lads take your dogs for a final walk to the woods when you feel they have outlived their useful working lives, please can you refrain from voting in the poll, as I want the numbers to reflect dogs which have died after they have had a working life, rather than being PTS because theyre no longer up to working, this isnt any sort of derogatory comment about this practice as I have done it myself in the past, and its never an easy task

Thanks in advance :good:

my oldest living dog was an 18 year old first cross collie grey ... she was worked with the ferrets from the age of 4 months and lamped from 7 months .... i retired her from lamping at 8 and from ferreting at 12 ..... she lived out the rest of her days on my mates fathers farm where she died from old age in her sleep ...........
