stubby 175
firstly, does her vulva look like this.... if so, put the hob in for 2-3 days, youll know if she's pregnant, as the swelling of the vulva will disapear Quote Link to post

Remove the male after 2 or 3 days just to make sure the procedure works. After mating, the female usually carries the babies and gives birth round about 46 days later. When she gives birth, just let her do all the work. As long as you feed her, she will feed the babies. Don't try and pick them up cause that could cause problems but thats a diffirent question. After about 4 weeks, there eyes will start to open and they will start to explore more and more each day. I would start handling them from here on to get them used to being picked up and handled. There little teeth are like razors so watch out. From 6 to 8 weeks on you won't know whats hit you, ha ha. Quote Link to post

I would have a good think before you do breed. There are other options like the jill jab. This jag brings the female out of season with no hassle of her having babies and it costs about £7.00. I done this to four of my ferrets this season just over a week ago now and the swelling has started to away already. You have to think of who is going to buy them because you only usualy get a £5.00 for them unless they are silver in colour (silver mitt) so if your think of making a little bit of money think again. To me, ferrets are worth alot more than a fiver. You cant put a price on a ferret. They are not just pets but they will be your working companiens. I think thats how you spell that. Im better that catching rabbits than i am spelling. Quote Link to post

One thing to point out is the jill jabs fine as an emergency measure but vets tend not to give it more than once, if you have several jills surely a vasectomised hob would be a better & none chemical alternative Quote Link to post

jazz_11 5
what sort of things u should not do when they are pregnant like handling in a special way or anything like that.... Quote Link to post
stubby 175
just carry on as normal, maybe supporting the rear half/legs with your other hand when picking up etc Quote Link to post
ade33uk 86
about 35 days after you put the hob over the jill clean the cage spotless especially the bedding area as when she has the kits at approx 42 days you wont be able to change bedding for another 2 or 3 weeks Quote Link to post
jazz_11 5
several people have told me they handled the kits the day they were born it all depends on how sure the mother is, and my jill, is very confident with me...... also does the vulva have to be completly swolen in order for her to get pregnant or can it only be a little bit..... also when the hob comes out of season will the lump on his belly dissapeare, as he scent seems to be going a little, so just want to make sure he will be ok for when she is in ful season or could i put them together now... The swelling varies from jill to jill & they actually need to be mated to ovulate , then the swelling goes down & the pregnancy should follow. My jill who is very handleable bit me the day she gave birth so dont expect yours to be as easy going as they normally are, there doing there job & shouldnt be messed with unless absolutly neccesary Quote Link to post
