lurchergrrl 1,441
This is the first time I've fed a pup on raw diet. When I got the grey, as an adult, I switched her onto it and my other lurcher ate it as well. Stella is nearly 15 weeks old now. Yesterday she ate 1lb of tripe at breakfast, two chicken wings mid day, copious training treats throughout the day, 1lb of beef mince for tea and a tripe stick She does get quite a bit of exercise; lots of running round in the garden and field - sometimes over an hour at a time, plus at least one road walk about 30 mins. I don't push her if she's tired, I basically follow her lead for how much exercise she wants. But should I be feeding more/less? Quote Link to post

bullx 12
I feed all my lurchers and terriers on raw meat, and it does them the world of good, they have backs on them like horses,as about how much you want to give her thats up to yourself,if she eats it let her have it,and you will find with all the exercise she is getting she will burn it off,a pup at 15 weeks is growing so she needs to get plenty of food to grow into a mature bitch. socks 32,253
that is way to much for a 15 week old pup ... you could end up with a pup with a distended gut ... allthough tripe is more water than anything else the sheer volume of food you are pumping into the dog means its metabolism will be going into overdrive trying to break the food down .... 1lb of beef mince split between breakfast and evening meal with some chicken wings miday would be plenty for a pup of that age imaterial of breed .... what type of cross is the pup ??? Guest reload
That sounds alot, it would depend on the size of pup, Tripes good stuff, i feed a fair bit, but not so good for a pup, red meats and high protein would be better suited. Quote Link to post
lurchergrrl 1,441
Well I was initially splitting a pound between two meals and giving her sommat else round mid day. But she got a bit skinny, so I upped it a bit. She's growing a lot at the moment too. I thought it was too much at one meal, but she eats it so I wasn't sure if I should let her have that much. She doesn't bolt her food down thankfully, she eats fairly slowly. Yesterday was the first time she ate that much which is why I asked for some input 'cause I don't want to do her any harm! My dogs have always had complete, except my wolf x, who ate complete plus whatever she caught. Looking back, I wish I'd never fed complete to my dogs. She's a big pup, 19" tts, 19" long and feet like snowshoes She doesn't just get tripe also minced rabbit, beef, chicken with bone content, fish, lamb bones etc. Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
the problem with tripe is that it is between 70 - % moisture with a very low protein level of below 15% ... now whilst this is ok to use as a filler for adult dogs it is of little use to a growing puppy ... i would recomend feeding chicken which is high in protein for muscle developemt and beef which is high in fats for energy that a growing pup needs and also a very good source of creatine essential to a healthy strong pup ........... Guest Ditch_Shitter
Are ye sure she's worm free? Don't give Dogs minced meat. That removes half the point of the exercise. 'Mincing' meat and bone themselves is what keeps their teeth so startlingly clean and white Quote Link to post

Ok, so more chicken and beef. Maybe a bit of tripe mid day sometime. Ta for that socks Thanks all, grateful for the advice Yes Ditch, she's wormed. I'm a bit religious about worming, having wee ones running round the garden with the dogs. Quote Link to post
lurchergrrl 1,441
half hour of road work is to much , good well balanced mixed diet little and often and just let the pup get used to traffic ,modern day life ,small amounts of every thing is the key Sorry I better clairfy that She comes on the nursery run and/or up to the shops with me and the sprogs - which is why it takes so long: when you're walking three toddlers you're going about as fast as molasses in January Quote Link to post
Guest reload
Some good advice there, make sure you throw her some big bones to get the new teeth out and save your furniture Quote Link to post

I tend to give her the bigger, harder bones for chewing on a couple of times a week, would that be about right? Quote Link to post
Guest reload
No probs, good for giving her something to do, builds muscle, helps with teeth, all in all your on a winner.... Quote Link to post
chris hickling 14
i feed tripe and have dun so for more years then i can remember ,never ad a skiny pup in my life, if any thing they end up to fat, 2lb of meat a day for a 19in pup ,i would up it a bit as shes out all over the place with you, av a look at my pups at 7 1/2 months old,and they out every day, good luck . socks 32,253
if you need to be feeding over 2lbs of meat to a pup to put weight on it then just goes to show how crap it is ... tripe is 70 - % moisture fact ... a pup is not going to get much out of that ......... Quote Link to post
