Snails eating bait

got rats out the front of the block of flats that I live in so shooting them is out, bought some traps and boxes and so far nothing, been using peanut butter as bait but one thing I have noticed is bloody snails all over the bait, is there anything that could attract the rats into the boxes that snails will not touch or is it worth scattering some slug pellets around the trap boxes, can`t use bait as its a public area and a couple of neighbours have dogs (was thinking of using the argon gas I have for welding and gas the twats, the nest holes are visible so I know where they are), any suggestions welcome.

Just put traps inside a circle of salt or sand even. Better off using water and hose than argon, also argon will probably kill them in the ground as it doesn't smell. Good luck,
