NV part one.

Recommended Posts

Following on from a post the other week regarding me getting another rimfire rifle but more importantly the DNToptics Zulus 5 - 20x day / night scope. Well a few things have happened since then with the BRNO rimfire being very inaccurate on a varying scale so it is going back and I won't bore you any further with that however the scope is bloody superb and this is my first impression.

My pal who I got the scope from strongly suggested I looked up on youtube how to use them which I did making a few notes for me to refer back to and I spent a couple of hours searching around the menu to look at how this bit of kit works. Let me say from the start that I am a 'technophobe' of the highest order not having a comfort zone whatsoever with electronic whizbangs like this and that was the case with a Pard 008 that I had for a while but let me tell you this scope is so easy to use and walk around the menu and unlike any other electronic nv I have tried (which is very limited so please don't think I know what I am talking about  ) this scope has fantastic image quality which made me smile to start with. My pal made a 3D printed lens ring with a lever to make focusing quicker and much easier and it does but getting down to business of using the scope, I will post the youtube I used to set zero in fact one shot zero and even I was able to set this up with total ease. Once in the set zero section on the menu you can select the style and colour of the reticle you like, I found yellow to my liking for both day and night, the shot is taken then you freeze frame the cross hairs on the point of aim (that does take a few attempts as it is quite twichy and very easy to freeze off the poa BUT I got there after three attempts, you then, using the X- axis control button and the Y-axis control button to move the cross hairs over to where the poi was on the target sheet, lock in the position with a simple press of a button and off you go.

In my case the one shot zero did not work BUT it was not the scope at all as there was and still is an issue with the gun and after changing the mod and exchanging the Zulus for one of my Airmax Compact scopes, I  got the same result.........................a lovely group at 25mt of around 2'' with every shot going in different directions. I do not know what is causing the problem but it is going back next week.

I took the outfit to a big rabbit perm I have and although there were no rabbits to be seen on that cold and windy night (good job with that bloody gun) but it gave me the chance to play in the dark to see how it performed. I did pick up a couple of rabbits that were about 120mts away so I could at least see what the image was like and in my humble opinion, the image was very good.  One thing I must say is that although I don't know what the correct term is, when panning across a field using the pard 008, the image kept on refreshing as you panned causing a jerky view of the area you were scanning but the Zulus was superb with hardly no jerky image in fact it was as good as looking through a normal scope.

My pal has the LRF version which has a range finder built in and balistic calculater, very slick piece of kit but a bit more expensive as you would expect. Another cracking feature, well in fact two features, you can adjust the magnification (5-20 times) with a small roller wheel on the top of the unit and no compensation for poa is required, it does it for you. There are 26 channels so you can produce a channel for different distances and on a sub 12, this is pretty handy. Changing channels is both quick and easy making this scope very versatile indeed and if  you wish you could have some set at distance for night shooting with different coloured reticle or style but to be honest I found yellow to be fine for daylight and night however we all like different things so it could be a handy feature for you.

As I am taking the gun back to get another gun, I have to do a 'like for like variation' with the firearms dept. before I can buy another rifle which I am not happy about but it will cost me more money so in the meantime I have given back the Zulus to my pal until I know how much more it is going to cost me to replace the BRNO then see if I can still afford the scope but I can only praise this product and say for my shooting it would be spot on and if any of you are thinking about this type of scope, please do have a look as I don't think you will be dissapointed.

Here is the youtube footage on how to set zero if it is of any interest. I will be doing a review on a add-on screen type nv in the next few weeks as we have several coming in for use on my sub 12 guns hence this is part one and that will be amazingly named part two.........
