Hob&Jill 258
Set 2 pots yesterday afternoon on a stretch of river a couple of miles from my house. I have had some good bags of crays from this part of river, even though it is to close to the estate house for my liking. Anyone else catch them? They are good eating, I am not mad keen on them but if they are on your doorstep then its a waste to leave em in the river! It is good having them set though the summer as it is something to do when when walking the dogs. And.........Obviously I am fully EA licenced H&J Edited to add pic A hour out last summer with a handline: Edited January 30, 2008 by Hob&Jill Quote Link to post
chirpy 0
I would like to know more how do you catch them and how do you know if there in your stream Quote Link to post
Little Butch 16
Crayfish are basically everywhere mate You can catch them on a handline like you would crabbing or you can also use pots. Hope this helps Quote Link to post
Hob&Jill 258
Type in 'crayfish pots' in ebay. There isnt really anything to it, just fill the bait pouch with catfood, kippers anything smelly really and lob it in the river (holding onto the cord ) then just tie it off onto a root or peg or something. Leave it a few days then collect. No real way of knowing, if there are people who are fishing on the stretch then as them, as they are bound to know . If you go up at night with a torch you can often see them in the shallows. Quote Link to post

The fishery I work for have traps all year round and they catch throughout the year. So I thought why not? AI will let you know how I get on when I pick them up on saturday Quote Link to post

I am in Surrey mate, not to far from Horsham. They are in most places, so there shouldnt be much of a problem finding them. If they are there, then where shouldnt be any problem catching them. Good luck with it Quote Link to post

peashooter 0
I shoot in North Yorkshire on a small pheasant shoot and this year we have had a little side bet going during the pheasant season, 4 of us have had crayfish traps of varying designs in the local river. Now we have had some really good catches but with the floods latley we have lost a few traps but the best one we have had is as follows - Sat afternoon is normally when we check traps after shoot so we goes up on said sat afternoon which I might add was following quite a bad flood so we had not been able to find our traps all week, so off we pops and get's to the river I cant find my trap anywhere 1 other trap missing asumed washed down stream never to be set eyes on again trap no. 3 was found were left tied with sturdy rope to tree, trap 4 was also not were it was left. we searched around for a while and finally set of up the river banking only to be met by said trap no.4 hanging in a tree 8ft up in the air now that was lucky you may say best part was the bloody thing had 36 crayfish inside it. Oh and we have been using catfood as bait as mentioned above the only thing with our little wager is the one with the least amount of crayfish at the end of the season has to eat a tin of the bait.  good luck with your crayfish hauling. I have never ate any from a lake though, whether they would taste as good I dont know? They might be abit muddy I expect gravel pits would be fine but silty muddy lakes I wouldnt fancy it. To be honest I am half wondering if my traps are still going to be there when I get them, had some very very heavy rain today and the river is well up. Hopefully my knots will hold!
