Bassett hounds

Had another invite out today from my gamekeeper, with the gentlemen and their amazing bassets

After all the foul weather we have had lately, the sun shone and it was a lovely day.

There were about 10 of us, 8 gunmen, 'S' with the beagles and myself with little Nell, for more experience.

The first patch of cover we went to do, the gunmen were in position but S could not start with the bassets, as a roe was panicking backwards and forwards along the fence line of the woods, so off i trotted with Nell at heel to move the deer out of the way.

What on earth is this Mam?

Unfortunately at one point the deer decided to run straight for us, then turn, so Nell, as any lurcher would gave chase. I allowed her to get so far then whistled. It was one of my proudest moments when she immediately stopped and returned to me. Now dont get me wrong, even if it was legal no way would i encourage a pup of her age to chase deer, it was just one of those things and a good training opportunity. She is still very much a pup so this was just a brill game to her, no fear of frustration etc at this point.

Then when moving to a different part of the wood the same deer was still panicking further down the fence. Nell looked interested, but a quiet no from me and apart from looking intently, stayed by my side.

No fox present so off to another field, could'nt belive my eyes when roe after roe jumped clear and out into the open.

Again no fox home so back to the cabin for our dinner.

After dinner to try another spot, i was placed in a field to scare the fox back into the cover if it came my way, and guess what........more deer, bloody loads of them HOW FRUSTRATING!!!! :wallbash:

A pair of fox were soon spotted and the vixen was killed with one clean shot to the head. The dog lucky enough to run another day.

Shooting is not a chosen sport of mine, but the honour to be able to go out with the most friendly, if not slightly nutty but professional blokes is an absolute pleasure, they are so patient with me and the pup. I am never made to feel like the silly blonde, nor are they patronising. I am simply one of the guys, and i love it. :clapper:

A huge thank you to Bassethund and the rest of the guys.

Moll & Nell.
