Carlow Lurcher, Terrier , Whippet and Strong Dog Charity Dog Show and Race Day , in aid of Irish Cancer Research Sunday 20th March 22.

Carlow is a place with breath-taking scenery situated on the River Barrow, Country Sports in abundance along side fabulous food and culture. All of these combined created and delivered an unforgettable experience last Sunday at Carlow Lurcher/Terrier/Whippet and Strong Dog Charity show and Race Day.

Barker Park, Old Leighlin, was the show venue and what a great sporting day that was at the end of the pandemic, and when all the work in the field was completed. There was a large turnout of dogs as this was the first show in the south of Ireland this year. The good Canine folk and their prized champions came from every County north and south of the border, all with their hopes and dreams on the big prize of the day. It was nice meeting up with old friends again, and also making some new ones as well.

Niall O Cloghan was there with his Terrier Maze and what a success that was. Well what can I say that would really explain the other side of our Terriers when they are not working in the field. Niall put this on display, showing what these we workers can do. The laughter and banter they brought to the folk around the Maze was mighty with all their sporting antics. Well done Niall.

The raffle as usual generated a great buzz  with some great prizes and some happy punters going home with armfuls of prizes.

Time passes so quickly and very soon it was Race and Show time. Here are the Racing and Showing results, courtesy of Stephanie O Connor.

Congratulations to all above winners.

There were a few poignant moments at the show on Sunday when I was very close to tears. Stephanie O Connors sister Helen Smith passed away a few weeks ago, and Stephanie put up the Perpetual Cup in her memory. This was given from the heart and what an accolade to Helen in her sisters memory. May Helen rest in peace. This cup was won by Edward Kane in the Over 24” HD

The 2nd Cup was in memory of Jimmy Scotts  wife Carol whose nephew is Shane Brett a very good friend of mine in the doggie world. Carol passed away after a long illness bravely fought and only been married 12 weeks to Jimmy. These 2 memorials really tugged at my heart strings, and although tinged with sadness at the same time, we in Country Sports had a feeling of pride to be part of these memorials.

And Finally, May I take this opportunity on behalf of Stephanie O Connor to thank the judges for a job well done on the day.

A special word of thanks to Ned Kane, Edward Kane, Yapper Hayes, all Stephanies Family, and anybody that helped in the field on the day.  It was very much appreciated.

And Finally,Finally, I always leave the best to last. Our gratitude goes out in multitudes to the organiser Stephanie O Connor, her husband, family and helpers for the most professional and courteous way this charity show was  carried out, and for all the hard work put into making this charity show such a happy and fun filled day for everybody and in aid of Irish Cancer Research. It was so much appreciated and well worth the long drive down.

And to end on a high and put the icing on the cake, Stephanies Charity Dog Show has made 3,285 Euro for Irish Cancer Research. What an achievement.

Just remember all you Canine people, by attending Sundays show you are part of helping to save some persons life in their hour of need by contributing to this great cause.

Cancer hits nearly all families at some time in our lifetime and believe me its not an easy road to go down. I know I was that soldier.

Thank you all for last Sunday and I look forward to more of the same in 2023.

Margaret Mc Stay

A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
