The DWTC Dog Show and Race Day Sunday 23rdAugust 2020

With the threat of Covid 19 wafting in the air and government restrictions at an all time high, the showing season for 2020 has been dreadfully short circuited with these terrible times. So it was fitting to go out on a high with the annual DWTC dog show and race day Sunday 23rd August.

It was a special treat in these dark days of Covid to hear again the laughter of children playing around the rings, the banter among sporting men and women, and above all the sound of barking dogs around the field.

From early morning, Canine men and women, from North and South of the border began to arrive with their prized Canine crew in tow. Although the weather was not on our side, it did not hinder the yearly Canine excursions from all parts of the country to this now very popular annual show.

As strict Covid 19 restrictions were in place, showing was held in the morning, with racing held in the afternoon. Rings were well spaced out, and all the good Canine folk politely adhered to the instruction laid down by the show organiser.

There was a large turnout of Terriers, Lurchers, Whippets and Strong dogs. Davy Downey was there with his ferrets, and no doubt stirred up a lot of fun and excitement. Around the rings the atmosphere was electric with folk keeping in mind the importance to adhere to social distancing.

Time passes so quickly, and showing time was getting under way. The wee people were first to kick off. It was some what satisfying if not rewarding to see the smile of pride on these little faces as they lead their canine companions around the show ring. Well done to all. You were all winners on the day.

A Big Congratulations to all the winners, and also to every one who took part on the day. You are all winners in my eyes.

And Finally, the day would not be complete without thanking the Judges. You all carried out your duties with effect and efficiency, and many thanks for that.

And Finally, Finally, I always leave the best to last. Yes Tom and Leanne Barry, Ethan, Morgan and back up team, you  are simply the best.  Through very difficult times you run your show with impeccable organisation, efficiency, and skill.

It was very evident a lot of preparation and hard work went on behind the scenes to make this show a success and a most enjoyable day for everyone. All events went without a hitch, and some very happy people went home with yet another nice trophy for their mantle piece.

Tom, we all had a very enjoyable day on Sunday, and although tinged with a little sadness with Covid 19 still around, that’s the show scene over for 2020. As Mr Fox will be back soon from his summer break, no doubt you will be going forward to pay him a visit.

To we meet again hopefully in 2021, God Bless and Stay Safe.

The Keep er Lit Dog Show and Raceday Sunday 20th July 2025
Doagh Equestrian is situated on the beautiful Antrim coast in the village of Doagh, Co Antrim. This was a new venue for the “Keep er Lit” Dog show and Race day and the ideal spot for   last Sundays Show.
From early morning, cars and trailers arrived from North and South of the border. Some people came as far away as Limerick and Drogheda with families and dogs in tow. Our good canine folk love a good dog show in the summer and a chat with like minded people. They certainly were not disappointed at the Keep er Lit show.
As the show progressed, so did the banter and the craic. The rings were well spaced out with a good long race track. Paul Boyd was there with his country sports stand, with everything needed in the hunting fraternity.
Some very tasty burgers were available on site and an Equestrian shop with great discounts on offer on the day. I had to take control of my retail therapy when I got into that shop, as I was like a child in a toy shop with to much to choose from.
The weather was glorious all day and at times to warm. As usual the raffle generated a great buzz around the field with some great prizes on offer.
The show started with the racing first at approximately 12.30

      Congratulations to all above winners.
And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the judges and their ring stewards on the day,on behalf of the Keep er Lit Team for a job well done.
Strong Dog Judge : Gareth Barnett
      Lurcher Judge       : Gerard Melaugh
      Whippet Judge      : Colin Maguire
      Terrier Judge         : Martin Breen
      Pets Judge             : Gail Ross
Judging is not an easy job, but you were consistent and fair, and very successful with the end product.
The racing was carried out as usual to perfection by The Mc Grath Racing Club Carlow. These people have many years experience in the Canine world both in showing and racing and their input helps to alleviate the pressure on the show organizer on the day. A job well done Biddy and team.
Some lovely photographs were taken on the day by various people, and no doubt these will be up on the site shortly.
And Finally, Finally, they say behind every good man is a good woman and Leigh Thompson along with Paddy Gibson, you both definitely fitted into that category. Your show was run with impeccable organisation. It was evident on the day a lot of hard work and sleepless nights was put into  this now annual Show. Leigh and Paddy you pulled out all the stops on the day and produced a top class show in a top class venue. Well done and a credit to you both.
I am Looking forward to more of the same in 2026. Thank you for the memories. To we meet again God Bless.
