I used to have flower pots upside down with a snap trap underneath and a little pop hole in the rim so the mouse could get in but not any birds,caught a good few mice with them but rats are a fecker to have around a aviary..

I've made a little tunnel box out of plywood a pop that over with two holes at each side of traps. Like you say if there not covered up birds will be at risk with the live traps.
