Wicklow Terrier, Lurcher and Whippet Club Dog Show and Race Day at Rathnew (David Dickensons Show ) Sunday 22ndJuly 18.

Rathnew Co Wicklow, is a village located south of the capital of Dublin, along the M11 motorway between Dublin and Wexford. Famous for its Gaelic Football , this lovely Irish country village lies comfortably among  the scenic and now famous Wicklow hills. This was the location for David Dickensons Charity Dog Show and Race day Sunday 22.7.18 .

We were up with the dawn chorus and headed for Mc Donalds in Newry, to meet up with all the other Northern Canine folk for the journey down to Wicklow. After a few hick ups along the way and a few laughs, we reached our destination around 10.00am.

It was not long to the field started filling up with a good mix of Terriers, Lurchers and Whippets from North and South of the border. A chip van, toilet facilities, ringside parking and a very good PA system were on site. Jade Dunphy, you done a very professional job, keeping the good Canine folk informed of their classes and winnings on the day.

I met up with some lovely people yesterday, some old friends and also made some new ones.  Graham Versey and Jennifer Arnold were there with their winning whippets and went home happy campers with an armful of rosettes. It was certainly Barry Chambers day on Sunday winning everything before him both in showing and Racing with his winning Whippet Alfie. Your dogs are a credit to you Barry, and you are a true country sportsman. Barry races and shows his dogs in the summer and brings them on vacation to the field in the winter to visit his friends Mr Rynard Fox and his neighbour Mr Bugs Bunny. What a vacation.

Jim Maher and Trevor Cahill Collars were there with every type of Dog Collar you could ask for. Thank you Denise Cahill for the lovely new Whippet Collar you designed yourself. I know it will be very lucky to us at future shows.

The racing began at approximately 12.30 noon

The racing created some laughter and excitement around the race track. I must say it was very relaxing, and April Dickenson made it look so easy, assisted by Jed Donagh on flag and Pat Dunphy on the lure. I really enjoyed this part of the show immensely.

Here are some racing results.

And Finally, I would like to thank the judges on behalf of David Dickinson, for carrying out your remit so diligently on the day.

Lurchers : Billy Burn/ Whippets : Tom Quinn/ Terriers : Tom Blackburn/ Pets : April Dickenson. Loads of photographs from this show on Face book at the moment.

There was a very poignant moment at the Lurcher ring when David Dickensons brother Noel Dickenson stepped forward to present the Arthur Dickenson Memorial Cup to Frank Kenny, Champion Lurcher winner, in memory of their late father Arthur Dickenson who passed away on show day some years ago. I am sure Arthur is looking down on his family with pride on this show day.

And Finally, Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank most sincerely David Dickinson, his wife Marie, daughters April, Tomasina, Delores Goucher, and all their loyal band of helpers on the day for another great family day out at their charity dog show. Many thanks for your beautiful presentation to me on Sunday. I do not deserve it, as I do this job as a labour of love and love the Canine Community and all it represents with a passion, and probably will continue to do so to the good lord decides to calls me home. Again many thanks.

The Dickenson Family are giving the proceeds of this Charity Dog Show to Pieta House.  Pieta House runs a free of charge service and since 2006 have helped 30,000 people in suicidal distress or engaging in self harm.  Also people can avail of bereavement counselling. What a very worthy cause.

David, we all enjoyed ourselves down there in Co Wicklow on Sunday, and look forward to more of the same again in 2019.

The Keep er Lit Dog Show and Raceday Sunday 20th July 2025
Doagh Equestrian is situated on the beautiful Antrim coast in the village of Doagh, Co Antrim. This was a new venue for the “Keep er Lit” Dog show and Race day and the ideal spot for   last Sundays Show.
From early morning, cars and trailers arrived from North and South of the border. Some people came as far away as Limerick and Drogheda with families and dogs in tow. Our good canine folk love a good dog show in the summer and a chat with like minded people. They certainly were not disappointed at the Keep er Lit show.
As the show progressed, so did the banter and the craic. The rings were well spaced out with a good long race track. Paul Boyd was there with his country sports stand, with everything needed in the hunting fraternity.
Some very tasty burgers were available on site and an Equestrian shop with great discounts on offer on the day. I had to take control of my retail therapy when I got into that shop, as I was like a child in a toy shop with to much to choose from.
The weather was glorious all day and at times to warm. As usual the raffle generated a great buzz around the field with some great prizes on offer.
The show started with the racing first at approximately 12.30

      Congratulations to all above winners.
And Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank the judges and their ring stewards on the day,on behalf of the Keep er Lit Team for a job well done.
Strong Dog Judge : Gareth Barnett
      Lurcher Judge       : Gerard Melaugh
      Whippet Judge      : Colin Maguire
      Terrier Judge         : Martin Breen
      Pets Judge             : Gail Ross
Judging is not an easy job, but you were consistent and fair, and very successful with the end product.
The racing was carried out as usual to perfection by The Mc Grath Racing Club Carlow. These people have many years experience in the Canine world both in showing and racing and their input helps to alleviate the pressure on the show organizer on the day. A job well done Biddy and team.
Some lovely photographs were taken on the day by various people, and no doubt these will be up on the site shortly.
And Finally, Finally, they say behind every good man is a good woman and Leigh Thompson along with Paddy Gibson, you both definitely fitted into that category. Your show was run with impeccable organisation. It was evident on the day a lot of hard work and sleepless nights was put into  this now annual Show. Leigh and Paddy you pulled out all the stops on the day and produced a top class show in a top class venue. Well done and a credit to you both.
I am Looking forward to more of the same in 2026. Thank you for the memories. To we meet again God Bless.
