Got the all clear for a days ferreting tomorrow...in fact the wife said are you doing any hunting before you have to go back to work? Friday i said is that OK!

Anyway i have sorted out a bag with 50 pursenets in , changed the battery in my locator, fed the ferrets and got all the other sundries together and ready.

I have a few bits left to ferret but some of them may be more than a 1 man job, some are capable of being done alone but are hard work,

anyway i have the best part of a strip of woodland to finish at the side of a road, i can park the car close and have lunch and drinks in the car, there are about 4 medium sized warrens left in this strip of wood, if i get through them and have time left there is a 40(ish) hole warren behind another farm yard that i could do, its all in the open along a hedge with only a couple of holes the other side. I also thought of these parts as they are under tree's and it says it may shower/rain tomorrow, so a bit of shelter may be useful

I did think of some other fence line warrens but they require a further walk and a bit more effort, and to be honest i cant be bothered with hard work at the moment (holiday mood) so hopefully the close to the car relatively easy warrens will be just that...... :hideingbhindcurtian: :D

But as they say "we only make plans to give god a laugh" i will see what the morning brings

Well the day started promising ,it was meant to rain and it wasn't raining when i woke up to the sound of the dustmen taking the christmas rubbish away, the loudest sound was my glass bin of empties :drink_nl: :D

As i was getting dressed my lad jake says "dad can i come" :D

so with a flask of soup a flask of tea and several packets of crisps thrown in a rucksack off we went.

We pulled up at the farm entrance and parked just to the side of the entrance, we were going to be ferreting the hedge either side of the entrance.

Jake threw himself into netting up

as you can see we were at the side of a road, so no dogs.

When we had the ferret down the first warren an old lady with a collie off the lead came walking up, i asked Jake to go and tell her we had ferrets loose and could she put a lead on her mutt as i was sure it had not been broken to ferrets etc...Jake tried his best but the old lady refused :grrr: so Dad runs down and explains in stronger terms, that the dog comes near me,the nets or my ferrets that were in the hedge and it wouldn't be walking home with her, she didn't put it on the lead but crossed the road :zip:

the old lady walked up and down the road and kept a wide berth of us on the way back also crossing the road

The first warren didn't produce any rabbits and after 30 minutes, out came the locator (the dial works brilliantly thanks RobW) and the ferret was located at 1 foot, a couple of spits of soil and rabbit number 1 in the bag, i didn't realise but Jake had never witnessed a dig!

anyway we were moving onto the second warren we had already netted and a ford focus comes screaching to a halt next to us, a young man starts shouting at me how i had threatened his gran :laughbounce2: i explained as calmly as i could what i had said and why i had said it, he wasn't listening, until i asked him if he wanted to get out the car and we could discuss this further :boxing: he thought about it for a second and then sped off :laughbounce2: Jake found this most amusing

Anyway onto the second warren

and a cleanly bolted bunny into a net

nets picked up and back to the car, we netted up a warren right at the side of the gate, yards from the car

Jake decided to have a bit of time out

i bagged another rabbit from this warren and we then had our lunch.

After lunch we did 3 warrens at the other side of the entrance.

starting at the furthest warren which produced two rabbits into nets and one that bolted through an un-netted hole and emerged air borne from a large pile of leaves

then two small warrens which produced 1 rabbit each.

End of the day, a bit of lad and dad time and 7 rabbits

we contemplated going to another farm, but Jake was getting bored (he is only 9 and has only so much attention span) i was feeling tired and needed a drink and it was also starting to rain a bit, we called it a day at 1.30 and came home, rabbits have already been delivered to the butchers :D :drink_nl:
