Longnetting

Well today was a first. The first time Jules and i have been ferreting together, the first time i have ferreted the new farm, the first time Molly (jules's terrier Molly) has been ferreting, and the first time we have used long nets......not that you can tell :big_boss::whistling::toast:

Stared with a hare lifting as we walked through the fields...off went Khan and Doris, for Khan to return with a badly split nail from the rock hard ice and ground

The first small set, one bolted, dogs caught it in the net, then the ferrets were not interested any more....same with the second.

The third is a big one under a load of Hawthorns, we sat motionless and the ground thudded under our bums at the rabbits running here and there, one rabbit bolted got out of the net and away to freedom before anyone could catch it. Eventually after much squealing Jules pulled out a wee baby (at this time of year???!!! :icon_eek: ) Then as we collected our nets in, Doris stuck herself down a hole and pulled out another.

Poor Molly was tied to the spade for most of the day, cos she kept upsetting the nets, but hopefully still learned, when she was off the lead she was marking well with Doris, the more we get her out im sure the more she will learn, plus the training Jules will do with her in the mean time. She is a lovely natured terrier, came out for a walk with me and mine prior, then back into my home with the various animals and never a cross word.....she is coming to live with me if i can sneak her into my pocket anytime :D

We were only out for about 2 hrs, caught 3 and a half bunnies and had a lovely day, one i hope to do soon, but in better conditions and for longer next time.

Thank you very much for your company Jules, really enjoyed today, much nicer than doing it alone.

:clapper: What a great day we had! I thought longnetting would be easy - how wrong I was!! :hmm: Mind you, I have to say its a top quality net off mole catcher, I'll just have to learn how to do it :icon_redface: the last set we ferreted was quite something mind! We were climbing through nettles and brambles and at one point I found a good sized hole by falling down it! Then we sat in silence for ages and heard so much thumping underground then a little rabbit shot out of a hole straight through the net! I was well chuffed with how well behaved my terrier was  She seemed to pick things up very quickly off Doris and like MOLLY says - was marking quite well. She's also a lot better with the ferrets now too. Today was a great learning experience for both me and my dog and Im already looking forward to the next trip out!! Thanks very much for a great day MOLLY! :D
