NEWKID 28,582
I wouldn't worry too much about the tackle for mackerel mate, as you can catch them on so many methods.. Personally a fairly light spinning rod and reel and any type of flashy spinner, wedge type lure is deadly..or a frozen Sandeel spun behind a drilled bullet can be great, also pick up pollack and bass like this. I'm not a fan of feathering unless I'm collecting for bait, for this you'll need a heavier rod and reel to properly work the feathers, 1 mackerel on light gear is far more fun and rewarding than 6 on a set of feathers and beachcaster. Best times are early morning or evening high tides, rocks, piers and beaches into deep water are normally best, when there are loads of mackerel about you'll see the bait fish beaching themselves as the are driven ashore, they are really easy to catch the when they are feeding like this... I'd be asking local where they catch mackerel, if the main areas become busy with mackerel bashers I like going off the beaten track somewhere nearby and find a rock mark of my own... Be careful on the rocks, don't bother if a heavy sea is running it ain't worth the risk of being washed off... Good luck Edited May 13, 2017 by NEWKID 1 Quote Link to post
