maybe you will want to get a telephoto lense for taking pictures in the field. in not sure if the d40 has the in camera lense motor--basically just ask if any lense your going to buy will auto focus on the d40.

maybe something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-55-200mm-4-5-6...d_sim_p_title_2

or maybe look at camera shops for second hand lenses.

That is the standard lens I believe that come with the D40, I just got given the body of a D50,I was told I needed a 55 - 200 for outdoor action shots (the type of shots I do are a 50, 50 mix of indoor kids shots and outdoor dog shots) Ebay is a great place to get a bargain I got a 18 - 55 and a 55 - 200 off there a few weeks back for £118 inc combined postage, not Nikon lenses mind they was Sigma, Bargain!!!!

absolutely but will that lense autofocus on the d40???

i had the same lense without the vr and it was very good but a bit soft so i bet it would be great with the vr.

edited to say that ill never buy another sigma lense in my life, one experience with them was enough.
