I dont own a metal detector so i read up about metal detecting apps for mobile phones.if any of you's have lost/left traps on jobs you know how annoying it can be so i downloaded a android app onto my phone called metal sniffer and thought i'd see how it faired.

I left/ lost a putange trap on a job and only realised when i got home... fast forward 4wks later and finally got around to visit the job site. Overgrown vegatation made it difficult to locate the old trap sites, but going off memory i roughly located the area i had left my trap at.i then set about searching with my phone with dector app switched on. After 15mins i had found my trap.

Before hand i tested it at home and the magnetometer gave a reading of 52 micro tesla units . This app detects ferrous metals but is unlikely to detect non- metal due to there lower magnitivity. Obviously this app has its limitations but does work.

Any one wanting to get this app and try it out, its available at google play.

That is brilliant! Thanks. :thumbs:

I set some Putanges in a large garden / field area last week and marked the locations with some Petsafe flags. Got back yesterday and some deer had been in the area and had made off with the flags. I found them laid about with signs of attempted chewing. I found two pairs, but I'll give this App a go tomorrow to see if I can locate the other pair.

<Edit>

I take it back. Just been out to test it and it couldn't find my feckin' van let alone a Putange. :laugh: And before you suggest it, it isn't a Reliant Robin. :tongue2: Anything other than solid metal like a hammer doesn't register until the phone is touching it. Maybe its my old phone that's at fault. But I ain't going to bother looking for the lost traps on that basis.

LoL clive, i agree i tested the app to detect certain metals and unless its got high quantity of steel or iron its extremely hard to detect. Some metals as we know are types of alloys which will then fall into the non- ferrous catorgories which give off very low magnetic signals and a phone app w'ont manage it .There are other apps that may suit your phone i just found this one seem'd to work fine on my samsung

If your phones is old it may be the sensors are damaged so w'ont detect signals. Every time i have used it i recalibrate it on settings and turn off screen rotation as this can affect detection.

Maybe it was down to luck i dont know, but i was chuffed i found my trap

How very dare you Sir! My traps are high grade stainless steel, not cheap ally Chinky crap. And whilst my van is French it is certainly a substantial lump.

Glad you found your trap mate. My back won't take all the bending to 'sniff' the ground to find mine. Pesky deer! :cray:
