Starting a young lurcher

Recommended Posts

Before I get the seemingly now obligatory moans and 'you should know better' type replies, I would like to mention at this stage that I have had running dogs and lurchers before, and plenty of gundogs in my past. What I am looking for is good honest advice from men in the know, so I get it right first time ~

I have a first cross Beddy Grey bitch pup who is currently 8 months old. She is retrieving well and seems keen to chase birds after shaking her puppyhood off, so now it is getting towards the next stage of her training, I guess. She is fit and strong, but unwise yet, and has never seen a rabbit in her life. I intend using her on the lamp mainly with some occasional daytime work, and only on rabbits.

How, in your opinion, should I go about entering her, and when?

this is the advise i had from snoopdog and all sounds good

ALWAYS AND I STATE AGAIN ALWAYS start a young dog in the day ....theres severl reason, but the main one is when its chasing bunnies at night the young dog will stop a fences hedges and other obsticials ,.....you dont want this ...imo ....because then they start doing it through the daytime ....nothing worse than a dog wont follow its quarry into hedges or cover or over a gate fence .ect ect .what ever ......when the young dog has caught through the day and followed it quarry over a fence into a hedge then you can start it lamping ....they will soon learn how far to go at night after a while ...but will still follow there quarry anywhere in the day time .......to get it started like some folk have mentioned find either mixyed bunnies or do as i do.. and thats plenty of droppers ....aleast a 2 or 3 a week for a few weeks ....this will build its confidance up no end ......and lesson your chances of having a yapper in your kennel. aswell ...which is another nightmare of mine .......thats my reason i start them daytime .....and this is the way i do it ..not everybody does it the same but it works for me up to now .... .............all the best snoop

and espeaily when the lurcher has terrier in its mix ....they have more tendency to yapp than most lurchers if they get frustrated whislt on the chase... so imho ...even more droppers ....to bring the young dog on  ....and go on your own without any older dogs there ....it will soon pick it up and will retrive better if theres no other dogs about when it made its catch .....all the best with it hope it does the bizz for yer ..otc ... :D:D

see i started my dog on the lamp at around 9 months old

just giveing him 1 / 2 runs but always ending on an high

with a catch

i find a rabbit right out in the middle of the field

theres always 1

if you say theres not then go out abit later

you want no or little moon

and some wind

if the nights not right then dont slip him

you say about starting him in the day

wich i dont agree with

as rabbits are alot harder in the day

and you dont want to dishartin the dog

but

saying that ive walked the dog with the other lurcher

from since the time he was alowed out / after hes jabs

in the fields

letting him sniff and chase anything that moved

the thing is at the end of the day its your dog

and you will know whats best for him / her

what i will say is that when you take im out in the day

spend some time 1 on 1

and not just take him out with the other dogs

you want him to learn from your lead

and not just run in a pack with the other dogs
