ferreting with MR TEA POT

Recommended Posts

had a days ferreting with MR TEA POT (paul)on abit of permission of his ,things didnt sound to promising as this place had been hit hard with mixy in the summer and with the high winds this morning i thought we were going to have a hard day.so a not so bright but early start found us waiting for it to lighten up and by 7:15 we set of to ferret the first warren of the day.the first warren was in the middle of a hedge which was situated between an electric fence on both sides, the brambles and nettles were pretty thick in places which made netting up hard,me starting from the right of the warren and paul starting from the left we had laid about 30-40 nets between us ,then the ferret was put to ground.in and out the holes she worked the width of the burrey but no rabbits.so we left the nets down and moved further up the hedge were there was another warren, this time i set my 12 yrd stop net about 5yrd infront of the warren tight upto the electric fence at a right angle 6yrds out then back in at a right angle to form an 'L' shape and paul set another little stop net inline with mine but on the opposite side of the fence.this warren looked alot more promising than the first as there was a few runs coming of the field and going into the holes, our idea now was to stand at end of the warren letting the ferrets work the holes between us and the long nets and when the rabbits bolted try and get then running towards the stop nets at the far end .this worked and within a few minutes i noticed paul was persuing a rabbit towards the net and when i glanced through the hedge i could see our first rabbit well tangled in the 4z net.about 5 mins later we had rabbit going from hole to hole untill we chucked one of the ferrets right up behind it ,it wasnt long before our next bunney was on the run with now me in hot persuit ,it crashed into the stop net and looked to have tangled up but this wasnt to be so it was once again on its way to the warren we had just ferreted and left the nets on .luckely for us the rabbit back netted and was soon pulled out of the hole and chinned.BACK TO THE MOTOR. and we were greated by the farmer who had a chat with paul and told him to grab himself a brace of pheasants out of the barn.after this it was onto the third warren of the day, this warren was in a ditch which ran along the perimeter of one of the fields,on top of the bank was a group of trees and bushes which would of been hard to net so we only netted the holes in the ditch.we also netted up the next warren which was a little further up the ditch .after the 20 or so nets were laid i set the longnet accross the field to hopefuly intercept any rabbits which bolted from the group of trees.paul started to ferret inside the ditch whilst i sat at the end of the net,the wind didnt help as it was blowing my scent towards the warren ,this was obvious when about 4 rabbits moved towards the net slowly then backed up back down some more holes, one rabbit wasnt so lucky and as it moved towards the net i ran at it making it sprint into the net which was quickly chinned.a hen pheasant had a close call and was also nearly in the net .i noticed paul was packing the jills away so moved back into the ditch were paul had another rabbit in a purse net. we ferreted a further 4 or so warrens with only the one bolt which was also well tangled in a purse net.i very enjoyable few hours in good company ,so thanks to you 'MR TEA POT' for a cracking day.pics to follow .
