The used 50mm M42 thread SLR lens takes in more light with a better quality image than the budget C mount lenses normally used for spotters: hardly surprising because they originally cost about a weeks wages when they were made. They are also slightly less focus fussy with a better Depth of Focus.

They are powered by 2 18650 batteries - not supplied, most NV users will already have a spare small illuminator that can be fitted to it with a weaver based scope mount. That allows the illuminator to be shimmed or otherwise adjusted high so the foreground is not washed out and the camera AGC can continue to see further rather than try to shutter out any excessive foreground light intake.

The lens and its adaptor are a little bulkier and heavier than some, so these are best suited to shooters using a truck.

The HD monitor has a brightness control, and has about 1 meter of cabling that allows it to be located into a truck - or on the grass if laying up at a bait station.

Additional 1 meter extension cables, or carriers can be supplied at £5 each.

The SLR lens will give a slightly better image quality than the budget C mount lens used for this video - note how aiming the illuminator high avoids washing out the foreground - which caused cameras to shutter down their performance - and allows the camera to operate with a smaller IR light source than usual because the camera automatic gain control will be better able to do its job. A humble 501b IR conversion torch was used.
