Had An Hour Out Tonight

Recommended Posts

AND BLANKED :o

First time out with the lamp on some recently acquired permission. I've shot this a couple of times with the air rifle and taken some good numbers in daylight. 12 was the best session. It holds massive numbers of rabbits unlike any of my others but the catch is the fields are small.

we jumped the gate and walked into a horse paddock lit up the first corner and some 10-15 rabbits were sat out. the lad had a shot and missed with the air rifle. i'd already agreed if he missed the shot i'd slip buck but how do you slip on 10 rabbits ? so i held him back.

the lad ad another shot and missed again and one broke and ran into the middle of the field so i slipped. Buck closed quick and the next thing he's jumping a trough out in the middle of the paddock. I heard a clang as he clipped it with his foot. the bunny hit the hedge and buck came back ok.

next field another shot with the air rifle and another miss. This time buck was away keener and just failed to pick the bunny up after a couple of turns before it hit a nettle patch by the edge of the wood.

another field on there's a charlie but he's way over the other side and no rabbits in the field.

next two fields had bullocks in so i didnt bother.

saw some 30 bunnies sat out overall so though we didnt catch i'm happy.

There are more fields that i havent had a chance to look over in daylight so i didnt lamp.

happy really . buck knows the season's back on and there's plenty to go at. Harder weather should be better. but the fields are small so its never going to be easy.

on a brighter note another permission has just cut corn so now the stubble's on .

nice couple of hours out and really enjoyed watching buck do what he does best.

on the way back we had a follow from plod. I've got all my permissions in writing now and the one i'd been to was blue tacked to the dash. after bout 1/2 mile they turned away. Shame i almost wanted a pull.

home and a beer. happy days

he only took the air rifle last night as i wondered whether we'd get a run at all with the fields being small. my lad knows what he's doing and he's safe. he missed 2 as he's rusty with the lamping. hard to judge distance at night . I'll check the other fields out this weekend, 2 look a fair size on the map but i need to know whats in em before i'll lamp em.

the horse paddock is clipped that short it looks like a bowling green and the rabbits cant half shift on that sort of ground.

once the stock is in there's more to go at.

there's some grand ferreting to be had on this land though. all the hedge banks look like honey combs with all the holes. Overall its a nice bit of land thats gonna give some rabbits up some way this season.
