Hornady Sst Ammo

Recommended Posts

Hi all bought some various ammo to try in the new rifle on Tuesday. One of the boxes i thought was vmax it is actually called .243 superformance 75g SST. I nearly bought the 58g vmax but wanted to try something a little heavier for a change. It has a polymer tip just like a vmax round. Do any of you guys have any experience with this type of ammo.

Thanks in advance

Dan

Dan, can't comment on it's actual performance in use, but it's essentially a deer round. SST stands for "Super Shock Tip" and it's designed to impart high levels of shock without fragmenting in the paraphrased words of Hornady's description. Despite the tip, it's basically designed for controlled expansion rather than explosive performance using what appears to be a proper copper jacket (rather than plating) to control the expansion rate. The Expanded bullet picture reminds me a little of the Remington Core Lokt, another popular deer round.

Some details on Hornady's tipped deer bullet heads here:

I also wonder how old the ammo is, as according to the Hornday website, they only currently make it in 95gr in Superperformance SST:

What you really want for varmints is the 58 or 75gr Vmax as you realised. I'm unsure of how efficient it will be against a fox sized target as it depends how rapid the expansion will be when faced with a fairly soft bodied animal. If in doubt you could always save these for deer and pick up some Vmax for varmints, or take them back. There's no doubt they will kill if placed correctly, just be even more aware than usual of pass throughs and possibly less shock transferrence if the bullet fails to expand properly.

Thanks alot chaps. I may just run these through the rifke on targets then as that way I'll get a good feel for the rifle. I'm going to try and find out how old this ammo is. Although I've done a quick Google search of the ammo and it appears to be a new product for 2015. Confused.com
