BlackStreak 498
I wanted to take my two wolf hound, deer hound, mastiff pups out without any adult dogs. My brother in law called and said he would like to get his Dane x Pit pup out also. Perfect! We found a group of pigs feeding in the middle a big wheat feild. After looking over the pigs with the infrared unit (to dark this night for good detailed pic with the night vision eventhough the pigs were spotted withe night vision) we felt confident that there were no big rank boars feeding with this small sounder of pigs. Wind was already blowing straight to us from the pigs and you could tell the pups knew the pigs were out there. My lead pup on this hunt is Lapua. She is a natural talent and very early starter. Her litter mate sister is not near as hard and I didn't figure she would help hold the pig but she needs to go reguardless. More maturing and more opportunities will help her switch on. It was my brother in law's pup first hunt but I knew this pup would grab a hold and be an awsome anchor when the hog was caught by Lapua. As we closed the distance my most inexperienced pup was lunging and raring up a little . Both my pups were sharing the same lead rope and both were pulling a little but remained silent. My brother in laws pup was smelling the pigs also and was pulling a little too. I was glad to see the lesser experienced pup getting so fired up at the smell of these hogs out in the field. As we got to within 150 yards, I unclipped both my pups. I got both facing the correct way, flipped my little flashlight on and give the command to "gettem" and give them a light shove off. Both pups raced to the pigs followed by the 3rd pup. I figured all 3 pups would line out on the same pig since only Lapua has much experience with catching pigs. Just as planned and hoped for, all 3 dogs lined out on the same pig. Do to the inexperience and the really dark night, Lapua missed her first 3 opportunities at catching the the pig but made good on her 4th. My brother in law's pup was right behind her and grabbed himself an ear and anchored the nice sow really well. While both pups held well my other pup would bite and nip the hog but wouldn't fully engage like the other two. I expected this from her but took her anyway. Eventhough she is Lapua's littermate sister, she needs several more months of maturing. The experience will serve her well though. We let the pups hold for a minute after we run up to the catch before dispatching the hog. Both my brother in law and myself were very proud of the pups and couldn't have imagined puppy night going any smoother than it did. 8 Quote Link to post
