martin 332
This is my first ferretting trip this season, and,I was waiting for my mate to come round, and,he was late.....so we didn't get there till midday. I was doing a hedge line(all hawthorn)of about 50yds to start with.It was riddled with holes, and,as usual it was murder to net, but, with a pair of seccateurs I finished netting up in just over an hour.My mate was on the other side of the hedge, and,as I popped the two poley jills in,I gave him the thumbs up.The adrenalin was pumping as always, and we had to wait just 5mins before the first net bulged and tore off out to the length of the cords,I was on it in seconds. But,I was about a second too late as the rabbit managed to fumble itself iut to freedom, and, into the hedge a bit further down, and into a hole that just couldn't be netted(lucky rabbit).A couple of minutes later and we were one rabbit on the deck,as this time the net held it firm. Then a very quick exit from a hole right back at the start of the hedge...the ferrets were working overtime, again it sideswiped the net, but, this time was backnetted cleanly and on the deck with the other.Another two rabbits joined them, and then as I was putting a net back over a hole a rabbit ran straight up my arm, and, instead of back into the hedge to be backnetted it ran straight across the field and off to safety.Well that was about it for that hedge, and we picked up the nets, and moved to a very large old rotten oak in the middle of the field. There is about ten holes around the tree,in the roots and in the field around the tree,we netted up,but,I didn't have a good feeling as I think that it is used more as a stopover than a living bury. And,as 5 mins turned int 30 mins, and, only one sighting of a ferret at an entrance,I thought we had a kill in.Then....I would like to say that all hell broke loose and rabbits were flying all ways......but,I'm afraid not! One poley came back out, and,I picked it up and we waited another 5 mins for the next one.We called it a day then as the sun was going down, and,I didn't want to start another bury so late in the day.Well 4 rabbits it was then, and,we both enjoyed ourselves, and, that is why we all do it isn't it.HAPPY DAYS!!!!!
