Blackbriar 8,569
Villagers in Pottery St Mary are pleased to have UK's first colony of truly wild beavers living near them. No-one is certain where they came from, but a small family of beavers has set up home on the River Otter in Devon. The animals will be trapped and disease-tested, before being allowed to remain, under management of Natural England. But while villagers may welcome the beavers, the Angling Trust are far from happy and are deeply concerned about the animals effect on local water courses and migratory fish runs. Supporters claim that the beavers are beneficial to their ecosystem, opponents see them as little more than destructive vandals. Can a "re-wilded" species, that has no natural predators, ever be successfully managed, when most of the public are so squeamish about culling ? Wild boar have re-established, so why not go the whole hog (no pun intended), and reintroduce wolves and bears ?
