The Irish Lurcher, Terrier and Whippet Clubs Christmas Dog Show.

A great day was had at the Irish Lurcher,Terrier, and Whippet Christmas dog Show , held at the Bannvale House Hotel Gilford, Banbridge, Co Down yesterday Saturday 20th December 14. Some sore heads and sore feet from dancing today, but great nights fun and frolics was had by all. The suffering to day was worth it all. Every bone in my body is sore. We eventually got home around 11.30pm, but I beleive some other partied on into the night..

A big congratulations to Nicky Robinson who won Overall and Best in show with her beautiful Whippet, and a Big Congratulations to all the other worthy winners. The Robinson, Fyffe and Mc Elwaine household took home some winnings between them yesterday. There was a great turnout on a mildly cold winters day. Bannvale House Hotel was a superb venue for this wonderful festive treat, and a big thank you to the management and staff of the Bannvale House Hotel, for the venue and all their kindness by all there staff to all our show goers.

The Club made some presentations on the day. These presentations were made by Dessie Mackin on behalf of the club. First presentation was made to myself for my writeups, photographs, and general contribution to all shows this year, up and down the country, and of which I am truly honoured ,grateful and thankful. The 2nd and 3rd presentations were made to Deirdre Mc Coy and Billy Harpur for their photography contributions to all our dog shows during the year. Well done Deirdre and Billy and well deserved.

As usual each year this show keeps a special award for "Sports Person of the Year ".This years winner is a real and true out and out Country Sports Person in every sense of the word. And 2014 winner " Sports Person of the Year went to Mickey Quinn from Lurgan Co Armagh. Mickey has country sports in his blood, hunts in the winter and shows in the summer. A big congratulations Mickey , a real gentleman and well deserved winner.

I met up with all the regulars, and also some new faces. The twin Pinkys was there, Neill and Philip. Such 2 lovely young fellows and always a pleasure to talk to. I also spoke to Louise Reid and David Nixon, lovely friendly people enjoying a day out at our Christmas Show.

And the man of the day was Dessie Mackin, who worked tireslessy along with the club to make the day and show a roaring success. Many thanks to Dessie and all the club committe and members for this now very enjoyable and Annual event.

The most important thing for me that came out of this show was, not only did we enjoy ourselves, but after all costs were paid £250 will be going to the Mac Millan Cancer Nurses, the full proceeds of the show. What a bonus, and hopefully this contribution from our show will make some poor persons end of life a little more comfortable from the hand of the wonderful Mac Millan nurses. To me they are Gods Angels on this earth.

** Please Note the club want it to be made known, going forward in 2015, EVERYBODY is welcome at their shows. We all must go forward in 2015 in harmony and put the hand of friendship out to all our country sports people, whatever club they belong to, and leave all our differences behind in 2014 .This is for the good of our Country Sports, we must keep it alive for our young folk coming up behind us, and feel free to attend the Irish Lurcher, Terrier and Whippet shows in 2015 if you choose to do so.

Club Chairman : Mickey Quinn.

Club Treasurer : Kathie Knox.

Club Committee Members :
Graham Fyffee
Darren Moore
Ricky Mc Elwaine

And Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish all our Country Sports people and Dog show organisers North and South of the border and further afield, Irish Game Fair Directors AJ & Irene Titterington and Co Directors, Irish Country Sports and Country Life Magazine Editor Paul Pringle, A very Happy and Holy Christmas and a bright New Year. A Tribute to the late John Shaw who passed away  last Thursday 6th November 25

      I Am Free
Do not grieve for me now my  friends and family, I am free
I am following the path God Laid for me
I took his hand when I heard him call
I turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To Love, to live, to hunt, to show my treasured Whippets, or play.
I found a peace at close of day.
Be not burdened with the times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
Perhaps my time seemed all to brief
Do not lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your hearts my friends and share with me
      God wanted me now,
      He set me free.
John, we will love you forever and you will be sadly missed by your loving family and all your Country Sporting Fraternity and in the show ring.
May the Angels above give you the best seat in Heaven and may your gentle soul rest in peace.
      For Country Sports Fraternity
